This afternoon I'm about to take a few people on a tour of Curtin Springs Cattle Station and around Mt Conner, always an interesting day but a long one.
My wife and I did the tour of Mt Connor in 1991. The place probably hasn't changed much since then, maybe the tour has? We found it interesting, although not tensely dramatic. The tour guy explained the operation of the place, and its geology and history very well. We saw quite a bit of the country in the day, and at the end of the day we were in the bar, when one of the stockmen from Mt Connor rode his horse into the bar and had a drink. The guide showed us remains of stromatalites 3500 billion years old. A few weeks later, we were in Hamelyn WA and saw living stromatalites. Rather different to the old stuff...
We spent 2 nights there, waiting for some friends to arrive. Night time was not happy, with the locals buying grog from the roadhouse and walking over the other side of the road and drinking it all night. So much for the law saying the you cannot consume grog within 2 km from where it was bought... Anyway, we gave up and then went to Ulara to meet our friends. Never been back that way since then. We should get out there again this winter, health permitting.
