Roadside Assist Australia-wide (Car)

Hello all,

We have the roadside assist for the bus covered by Ken Tame/CMCA, but having acquired a car, have to think on that.  We are currently in Queensland, but being full-time on the road, will be shifting about.  We have a physical address (family in QLD) we can use as a 'base', and a PO Box for mail.  The car IS insured, but the options offered are limited.

One of the options we looked at is NRMA - $55 joining fee, then $199 p/a for their Premium Care, which covers remote areas.  Anyone have any thoughts/suggestions?

Cheers!

Have the car serviced at Ultra-Tune and they have a Nationwide roadside assist for their customers www.ultratune.com.au/roadside-assist/

We have premium care with NRMA and have had to call them twice in the last year. We are in Yulara N.T. at the moment, so remote, and we have had good service . Once for dead alternator and once for fuel pump dead. (we now only use Premium as Mechanic advises against Opel, which was all we could get when we were more remote) both times car put on tray tow truck and transported to nearby workshop. Great service and quick repairs, a little wait for parts. And the good part no charge for the service, paid for repairs. I would recommend.

Carline also have Australia wide roadside service if you have your car serviced with them. If you decide to go with one of the auto services don't go NRMA as they cover the car only. RAC cover the person regardless what he/she is driving

Everybody seems to offer roadside assist these days. They all use contractors, including the various state motoring organizations. GOD help us all if we break down. When you ring for assistance you get someone that sounds as if they are in an overseas call center!

Gday...

confuse which "RAC" Peter?

RACV definitely still covers the person - ie now matter which vehicle I am driving, even a vehicle I do not own, is fully covered by my RACV Total Care membership.

Cheers - John

Rosie - are you sure that the Ken Tame cover is for Roadside Assist - or just for towing, for the bus?

We both have Total Care with RACV for cars, but have taken out the extra Tow Pack with one of the Total Care, to cover the bus, which is over 4T. Costs extra but does provide roadside assist etc.

Towing - which is really all we could ask.  Getting parts for the thing is a bugger at the best of times, so if we can get a tow, it is all good.

All the auto clubs (RACQ, NRMA, RACV, etc) have reciprocal arrangements with each other, share the same restrictions etc, and provide Oz wide coverage even in the remotest location.

Many of the manufacturers or dealers roadside assist covers aren't worth the paper they are written on once you read the fine print.

Be aware that auto clubs limit the length for service towing to 7 meters unless you take out additional service cover, so your car may be covered for normal roadside service but you'll have to unhitch that van and leave it on the side of the road or pay $$$$ to have it towed.

Rather than take seperate roadside service cover for each vehicle it is often worth taking the Platinum/Gold coverage as this covers ANY vehicle driven by the MEMBER and usually 1 other nominated vehicle driven by anyone (such as spouses car), as well as a whole host of additions such as loan vehicles, accomodation, air fares, vehicle contents insurance etc, etc. .

So factor in the individual costs of covering perhaps 2 cars, a caravan, a boat trailer, a motorbike, etc and you'll see that the Gold cover works out way better for us nomads.
