Thanks for that info Troopy, Having read it right through the comments, I can't see anyone who has down-loaded Windows 10 to their satisfaction !!!

G'day folks

KJ I had a beef about win10 some time ago, but after a couple of updates and a bit of time learning how it works I'm happy with it. Ticks along quickly and works a treat on my laptop.

I have been using it for at least three months and have had no problems with it. My eldest son works as an operations manager in I T and they use it again without any issues/problems. I find it easy to use and several of our friends have also downoaded it. The only poeple who have issues are those that are not using it because a friend of a friend has heard its not the bees knees.

There have been plenty of threads on this forum where many have been happy with Win 10.

A word of warning however, if you are on a limited download budget be careful with the way you set it up. There are many things in the default set-up that will screw up your data allowance. One of the first things you will be presented with is an option to accept an express option with the set-up, DO NOT ACCEPT IT. Go through every option and say no unless you are certain you will want the feature. Some of these things may be desired later on, you can go back and switch them on if you really must have them, none of them are required in a basic operating system, they are just trinkets that eat up your data.

Even though though I switched them all off the system was chewing through great heaps of net allowance. I had GlassWire free installed on my Win-8 before I updated. In the first half day during the set-up (and after the big 2.6 G download) I chewed up over 600 MB of data. After subtracting around 300 MB of programme updates I would not normally use the rest of the download was more than the daily allowance from my 8 GB plan. There are heaps of things I found that eat data, things like Windows Explorer which I had not opened (I use MultiCommander instead.)

Examining the results in GlassWire I found most of the features in the tiles section of the Start Menu were accessing data. Most of them are live tiles. They are looking at news, weather, finance and many other services even though I had not clicked on them. So one of the first things you do is to set them inactive and then unpin them from the menu.

I am now home and not using a relatives unlimited download allowance so I have reverted to my Win-7 tower computer. I am watching my usage of the net via the GlassWire programme I have installed on it. In a few days time (and after the Sydney-Hobart race has finished) when I have a clear idea of my normal usage on Win-7 I will go back to my Win-10 notebook and do some more testing there. I may have more to report.

The bottom line is remove every feature off your Win-10 you can get away without using if you are going to use your computer on mobile internet. You will find that your speed will be throttled very early in the month with a standard installation.

Thanks for all the info PeterD, I can get around a working system O.K. but, I'm not too Savvy on down loading a new program like Win 10

Knowing my luck , I'm bound to come unstuck half way through the down load, then have to take the Computer to one of these rip-off wiz kids, who just love to show you up, by fixing the Computer at lightning speed and at the same time charging you $$$$$$$$

"Strewth" I've just got the hang of Win N.T. and now that's gone out the window,!!!

After reading about all the problems that can be in-counted with this Win 10 , I may be better off sticking with Win 7

As I said at the beginning, I only wanted to be able to get Wikimaps , on my Computer, but if it means a lot of hassle, I could be better off updating my old phone, which can only make phone calls and not play music or has in-built maps and all the other garbage that you see the young 'ins using all over the place,

A tip for windows 10 is that you can set the connection type to "Metered Connection" this stops all updates from windows from running through that connection

No, you don't need a touch screen.

Windows 10 is an excellent operating system, I downloaded it in August without drama, from memory took about 1.5 hours.

It boots up fast.

It's stable.

Easy to navigate.

I'm running all of my old software on it, including Office 2007 and a couple of obscure stock market charting programs.

I've used W95, W2000, XP, W7 and Vista, W10 beats them all, hands down.

Yes, like all operating systems, to get the best out of it you need to configure it to your liking, not a major chore, there's plenty of online info to assist you with this.

Would I revert to one of Widows previous versions? no. smile

G'day kiwijim, what phone do you have that does not have all those useless things on it like music etc. It sounds like my kind of phone, I just want one that I can make and receive calls or send and receive tx's on. Thanks.

I wanted to stay away from win 10 but this afternoon i decided to install it
before I did I made a new system restore point and I done an Paragon system backup
So if I don't like it I can go back to windows7 with no problems
It is a bit of getting used to and like our Chief of Cheer would say "I tell you that for free"
So far so good I must say

No problem with it, as is not much different from W8.

I have touch screens on both laptop and PC and all good.

.. another small discovery for me on Windows 10 !

Using "edge" as the be-all and end-all browser that they want us to use was really annoying me.

Primarily because it functions like it it was on steroids .. it's meant to be "all-encompassing" and no doubt it has quite a capacity to do so ..

However .. I like things to be a bit easier for me to handle, so it's nice to know that Internet Explorer (11) can still be set as the default browser on both of my 'puters

(I've temporarily put Firefox aside while they sort out a few of their tech/compatability problems) .. still using Thunderbird for my email though ..

Try typing IE into "search" .. it should come up and provide you with a few options .. pin it to the taskbar .. it should then also offer you the option to set it as your "default" browser ..

Before I set them as my default browser, I found that IE moved quite slowly .. Being set as default also seemed to stop "edge" from stealing the resources quite nicely !

Windows 10???, why not use a PM.

G,day June, My phone is an 6 year old unbranded one, sold be a Telstra store as their own . you can txt on it and take photos, I think,

only ever taken one picture but, not happy with the quality, not worried about that as I still can make calls on it O.K. and that's what I wanted it for anyway.

Hi Johnathon.. Have you tried Waterfox in place of Firefox as your browser.. It removed a few of my issues.

Yes .. Waterfox is very good as a lightweight version of Firefox.

I did not retain it at the time as I was soon to upgrade both 'puters to W10 and I tried to keep things very much the same on both machines.

Waterfox was good and I will no doubt look at it again.

.. just one of the computers had a small problem in that it wouldn't always save (system) settings when requested. This computer was upgraded from Windows 7 and was not one that was recognised as W10 ready or "compliant". I downloaded the appropriate ISO and did the installation which went through without a hitch.

Apart from not having the use of an interactive screen, it all just functions fine and I'm more than happy with it. This is most likely a compatability issue and not a problem with W10. This computer is an ASUS G75V and it has shown a few peculiarities despite its capabilities .. (i.e. on this machine, Bluetooth never worked on Windows before W10 was installed) ..

Thanks Jonathan, I was a little afraid that you were going to point out a major problem. I will stick with FF, I don't know of any of the other browsers that you can add Lazarus to. I would miss it greatly if I did not have it. This is the write-up from the FF addon page.

Ever had one of those "oh $*#@" moments when you realize you've just lost half an hour of your life because something went wrong while you were entering stuff into a web form and there doesn't seem to be any way to recover it? If so, you need Lazarus. If not, install it anyway, before disaster strikes!

Lazarus securely saves forms as you type, allowing you to safely recover your lost work after server timeouts, network issues, browser crashes, power failures, and all the other things that can go wrong while you're entering forms, editing content, writing webmail, etc, etc, etc...

Lazarus works on ordinary web forms, WYSIWYG editors, and even AJAXified comment boxes, and will save you from pretty much any given server, browser, or connection problems that might otherwise cause you to lose your work, or that really pithy blog comment you struggled on for over an hour.

Lazarus 2.3 uses RSA and AES hybrid encryption, so your form history is more private and secure than ever! Lazarus also includes search functionality so you can recover text even if you can no longer find the original form you entered it into.

Never did get back to 'Lazarus' .. I seemed to get easily distracted on some other activity that appeared much more interesting at the time ..

If I remember correctly, a 'lazarus' first appeared in an early release of Win95 .. of course I think it was merely a 3rd party proposition of the day !

Technology is quite unique at times .. I'm surprised that so many old "hackers" still exist when its easier to duplicate a website and dismantle at your own leisure ..

enough of that though ..

Will look into Lazarus again !

Windows 10 they can keep it

It all seems to alright when I just installed it
A few programs what I use all the time won't run in it
Like my TV card and a few of my games
It wont even let me install them so plenty of "oh $*#@" moments
for normal computing we don't need all the fancy stuff like to talk to your computer
So my opinion is:I think it sucks It wont even let me be to go back to win7
Lucky I did make a copy of win 7 on a SSD drive so nothing lost there
Unless they fix a lot a of things I won't be putting it back on
even to connect it to an existing network with 8 connections was not easy
Not looking forward to this week my wife want to get a new laptop with 10 on it
It wont be long before I put Seven on it

Bad luck John, guess not everyone is as fortunate as I was.

I'm still very happy with both both my laptop and desktop machines running W10.

As I said earlier in this thread, have found it to be stable, easy to use and boots up fast, in fact best Windows operating system I have used, have not had a single hiccup with it.

As well as Office 2007 I'm using Metastock and Insight trader (Technical Analysis stock market software) both resource heavy, W10 handles them in its stride.

Both of my PC's are running Intel Core i7-4770 CPU's @ 3.4 GHz with 16 GB of RAM.

I also have a backup desktop machine running XP that I use offline,while its fine for what I'm using it for XP is not even in the same street as W10. smile

Before you go to setup W10, you should check compatibility of your programs for Windows 10, this can be done via Microsoft Website.
I downloaded W10 and have used it for 4 months now, would not go back to 8 but I do still like 7. But 10 will do me, just need to make certain that you do not set it up for automatic updates as it will chew through your download, as other have said. I run it on my laptop and love it now I know how to use it.
