my xmas day charity - Saint Mary's House of Welcome

Hi there, so rare for this struggling charity to receive much deserved publicity, today's story in the Herald Sun newspaper.  This is my 7th year as a volunteer, I'm a "table runner", serving food.

Every year on Xmas day, Suzanne morphs from customer service worker to Xmas angel.  When most are sitting down to a hot lunch with loved ones, she is selflessly dishing it up to strangers.

The 73 year old is the gravy lady at SMHOW on Xmas day, she wears with pride.  She has given up her Xmas Day to volunteer at the charitys Big Give event since its inception in 2003, helping to brighten the lives of the homeless and disadvantaged.

Its the reward of putting smiles on peoples faces, its such a wonderful feeling, she said.  I wanted to do this when my parents passed away.  Im the gravy pourer, and I just cant describe it, its just lovely.

This year up to 300 people are expected to flock to the Fitzroy Town Hall for the event, dining on a traditional Xmas feast with all the trimmings.

Ms Gray will catch a train from Clayton to the city, then hop on the bus to Fitzroy to lend a hand at the celebration, featuring entertainment, music and dancing.

Santa Claus makes a visit to give presents to each child, while adults receive a $30.00 Coles Voucher.

St Marys House of Welcome relies on the community, business and government to donate items from napkins to ham and the hire of Fitzroy Town Hall.
