Fishing around Australi

Just a quick query.If you are traveling around Australia. You are a self funded retiree and you like fishing. Do you have to have a licence from every state. PLEASE tell me there's a loophole that you know about and you don't. Dave

I can only speak for WA.  No license needed by anyone fishing landbased except in a Freshwater River.

No licence here in Tassie if fishing in salt water with rod & reel or handline either landbased or boat, although there are various size limits & times for different species. A licence is required for fresh water  fishing.

Licence required for boat fishing ( regardless of size of boat or depth you are fishing ) but not land based (beach or jetties) in WA.

I googled 'fishing licences' & got sites for each state

.................................................................

for NSW  exemptions include Pensioner concession card holders/DVA/Aboriginal  etc

http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/recreational/licence-fee/exemptions

...........................................................................

for QLD ..

https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/fisheries/recreational/rules-regulations

Anglers do not require a licence to fish recreationally in Queensland, except if fishing in some stocked impoundments. The content below provides detailed information on anglers' responsibilities when fishing in fresh waters and tidal waters. Fishing rules apply to all ages but children should be of an age where they can be responsible for the use of their own fishing gear

...................................................................

for Vic ..

http://agriculture.vic.gov.au/fisheries/recreational-fishing/fishing-licence

Do I need a licence?

A Recreational Fishing Licence (RFL) covers, all forms of recreational fishing in all of Victoria's marine, estuarine and inland waters.

Unless you are exempt, a RFL is required when taking, or attempting to take, any species of fish by any method including line fishing, bait collection, gathering shellfish, yabby fishing, prawning and spear fishing.

Who is exempt?

ranger checking a licence

You will not need a licence to fish if you are:

  • under 18 years of age;
  • 70 years of age or over;.

or a holder of a:

  • Victorian Seniors Card or interstate equivalent;
  • Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Card;
  • Veterans' Affairs Repatriation Health Card coded (TPI)
  • Commonwealth Pensioner Concession Card coded either (DSP), (DSP Blind), (AGE), (AGE Blind) or (CAR)
  • Or a member of a traditional owner group fishing within an area subject to a natural resource agreement relevant to that traditional owner group.

Ordinary HealthCare Card, PPS (Parenting Payment Single) and Newstart benefit cards do not afford an exemption to requiring an RFL.

..............................................................................................................................

If you want the other States just google 'fishing licences WA/NT/Tas/ACT'

It will certainly vary from state to state .

Unless you can claim indigenous heritage , then no lic required anywhere , just size and baglimits apply .

While fishing Victoria you need a license in fresh and salt water. They check you a lot in the bay. But I see your point ..You should not have to buy a license for every state. This is also like launching a boat in port Philip Bay. I have a yearly ticket $85 for Werribee but if I launch from Williamstown Altona or Queenscliff  I have to get a daily ticket separate for about $16.
