Petrol gouging

On tonight's news the ABC said that the ACCC has accused the major retailers of extreme gouging of the motorists, they did not name the companies but we seem to have a bad bunch retailing petrol with at least two gouging and another paying slave level wages to their staff, I very much doubt they were referring to the independent retailers.furiousfuriousfurious

its about time we stood up and told this lot to shove their petrol, I know it can't be achieved everywhere but where there is an option I suggest we only buy our fuel from independent operators, how about giving it a go for a month and while we are at it ALDI seems a good place to shop.

if you think about it your four cents a litre discount is only worth around two Dollars a tank of petrol and the current rip off is costing you much more than that, come on give it a go support small businesses and give the big ones a miss.

I agree Aussie Traveler. I read somewhere once that if you want to upset a certain brand of fuel just boycott their outlet for just one day so lets do a good job of it and don't buy fuel from one of the major retailers on Monday and Tuesday that can't be too hard to do and what would we have to lose. ?.

Haven't brought fuel at either of the supermarket servos for almost a year now.  They inflate the price of diesel here to offset the unleaded price.  Supermarket brand diesel $1.359, the independant I get my fuel from $1.169  Well worth the travel of a couple of extra kilometres biggrin

I figure the independent ones to be servos other than Woolworths and Coles I know that most of the seven eleven are owned by independents but the way they have in general treated their staff means they are no better than the other two when it comes to ripping people off.

All we have to do is ban one company , then they have to lower the fuel ,the rest will follow. Simple!......................... but it wont happening .

Aussietraveler i will not buy fuel from anywhere except a truckstop if a cole express/shell or caltex is not nearby. I think your idea is without merit and poorly thought out, the big 2 coles & woolworths are both bound by eba's which are signed off by frair work au and the SDA (union) see's employees being well paid for their work, that guarantee does not extend to independant operators, whilst they are covered by an award, those employed by them can only hope they are paid correctly including super payments. The average punter buys fuel when the gauge gets low, rarely is it a planned purchase, unlike us GN's who look at where their next fuel or overnight stop is, so such an idea would have little or no effect. Too many are quick to bash coles and woolies like foodland they are australian companies employing australians and profits staying in australia, you dont need pay a membership fee to shop there like costco, where do the profits go from aldi?.

That's ok I can accept that people will disagree with me and you are most welcome to be one of them.

Unfortunately the fact that Coles and Woolworths are Australian owned companies they both have a substantial reputation for ripping people off us the fuel buyer and the companies from who they purchase products for their retail outlets and by the way I certainly did not suggest that either of these two companies rip off their staff, my statement was that seven eleven had been caught doing this.

We have reached the point where we don't refine oil here anymore so it's all coming in from O/S so the price really is in the control of the O/S market and the OZ dollar value, all O/S contracts are written in US dollars so if ours goes down we pay more in US $. They once said if oil dropped $1.00 a barrel the price at the pump would drop 1 cent if that's true the current price should be down in the 80cents/lt Don't hold your breath for that to happen , once up it's there to stay just like everything else .

Seen any drop in anything since the carbon tax was abolished. Not Bloody Likely

Going back to what Aussie traveller is talking about. Regardless of where the fuel comes from the price of oil has dropped around the world but at the bowsers it hasn't dropped as much. The refineries overseas are selling petrol and diesel cheap but the shells bps and caltex etc servos are pocketing huge profits. All fuel should be under a dollar a litre but its not. I didn't want to mention names but say for example everyone stopped buying fuel at coles outlets it would soon shake up all of them. Its not too hard to do.

Just for a excercise this month we have done a bit of driving, we fueled at a independent at a good price used most of that fuel over the weekend to run up country, Monday refueled before leaving for Canberra. Then at warwick, Glen Innes, Tamworth, Wellington, Yass, Camden, Freeman Waterhole, Coffs Habour and Brisbane at home all independents, high turn overs, mostly modern servos. We paid sub $1.20 for desiel all but one $1.22, major sellers were 8 to 10 cents dearer over the 2 week period. Approximately 440 litres ops I saved about $40.

The one thing I did notice was that at all the servos the staff were friendly, non English back grounds but cheerfull and took my money with a smile. Good on them.
