We need some advice on places to stay and free camps. We will be travelling South Coast NSW and planning on going to Lakes Entrance and Phillip Island Victoria. The difficult thing is we start off on 16th January, still in school holidays so thinking free camps until the end of holiday period. Can anyone shed some light on where to stay???
I always use Wikicamps to find those sorts of things Lorraine. Costs a couple of dollars to put on your phone etc and worth every cent. Always been able to find somewhere.
East Gippsland is not over-endowed with free camps. Genoa, Snowy River 1 & 2 along the Orbost - Marlo Rd, Wattle Park in Rosedale & Golden Beach are all good among a few. At that time of the year though, they'll most probably all be full. A few overnight stops are Mckenzie River (Bemm River Scenic Reserve) & Drummer Rainforest Walk, both on the Princes Hwy but they have very limited space. Cann River & Mallacoota both have East Gippsland Shire controlled CP's at reasonable prices. It's pretty much a ''mad house'' along that stretch of coast in the January school holiday period as it is for the rest of Victoria.

I have Camps 6 Dave, Wikicamps won't tell me how busy these free camps sites are. Thanks Desert Dweller very helpful information. We may have to look at stopping and waiting out the school holidays or an alternate route.
I wouldn't wait till after the holidays. I have nothing to contribute about your journey EXCEPT my wife and I have always found something. Pubs are usually good if you ask the owner and you have a meal they let youstay OR they can tell you about somewhere you can stay if you want to go in and ask. I've normally found most locals to be very helpful. Dave
Coast and free camps very hard to find free camp near the coast .Some time you can park at the back of shopping centre , My so live near Brookside shopping centre in Brisbane and I often see motor home park in the car park at night and still there in the morning , These shop trade till 9 pm so up till then your shopping and then forget to go .
Wish you luck at that time of year....we have just returned from that same journey and was amazed at the cost in peak period, however we managed $35pn x 2ADs at PI less our Club Discount while at Anchor Belle Tourist Park - Phillip Island, nice clean & quiet park and would recommend.
Also found Oz Park at Lakes Entrance to be very good at $25pn x 2Ads, but best book ahead, however there is a free camp set up at Lakes Entrance, so suggest you contact Local Tourist Info Centre or CAW.
Almost forgot the lovely free camp at Genoa on Vic border, showers/toilets plus super camp spot all for a gold coin donation.....for more refer CAW 7 or 8.

We mentioned that one in our reply. It WILL be packed full in the period that you are thinking of visiting. If you're looking for a quiet camp you're out of luck at Genoa. Most people overstay the 72 hr maximum stay period & most don't ''donate''. We've probably spent 4 years in total, camping on the East Coast of Victoria over the past 43 years. We visit every year. Genoa used to be a Shire CP but the location is a no fuel, no shop, just a broken down pub hippie/greenie location. If you enjoy nature like us though, it makes a great base to explore the wonderful area! A lot of people enjoy the ''free camping'' sitting around doing nothing at all not realizing that they are in one of the BEST locations in Victoria. Genoa is becoming more & more popular as word gets around.

We have found that the crowds along the Vic coast start to thin out a bit once factories and businesses start up again after roughly, 2 weeks over the Xmas - New Year period. After the 16th it may be a bit easier to find spots to stay.
Thanks for all your replies. It's helpful to find out information from people who travel this area and know just how busy it is and that's what we were looking for. We know a lot of free camps but don't know what they are like and if they would most likely to be full. This is our first trip to the area.

Hi 2 spots worth checking out(can be busy)1 port albert 24 hr overnight stop right on the foreshaw great fish and chips 2 rest area at Toora beside a creek large area with toilets and rubbish bins very peaceful,i know these area's well as we live local,yarram has a free camp just on the east side of town(rv friendly) i'm envious as I see these areas on a regular basis and see they are well utilised and seeing people enjoying this great country,good luck and enjoy Danny and Rosina
