Press release/test vehicles are often run in, taken back to an R&D facility, stripped down, then rebuilt. Hopefully this vehicle is a re-build problem, not a build/design problem.

Gday...

I reckon there would be NOTHING more frightening that driving along the road minding your own business and having the vehicle begin to smoke and burst into flames.

I had a mate who bought a new Triumph Stag back in 1977 ... picked it up from the dealer, headed out onto the road and about 5km later, decided to have a cigarette. He pushed in the cigarette lighter - smoke ..... and then the smoke began from under the bonnet which quickly became flames.

Complete write off in less than 5 minutes. cry  Thankfully the dealer finally organised a replacement vehicle ... but it took some to-ing and fro-ing back to the Mother Land before it was agreed.

Like life ... ya just never can tell. cry

Cheers - John

Mobs of these vehicles ( New)  on the roads of South East Asia.

Drove one for several weeks and not much difference to that of a BT50 or Ranger.

Reckon is same same car with a minor face lift.

The F-Series community who could not bring themselves around to buy a Toyota Cruiser bought the Explorer. It was not a real off-roader like the Ford Bronco / F-Series type of vehicle and they were disappointed as it was not the vehicle they thought it was. So the vehicle was nit-picked. I spent 6 months working in a team on three vehicles that were getting a bad rap; the Capri, Explorer and Louisville. Most stories were de-bunked. The press had a field day and everyone with a gripe went to the press. Several were finance related (over commitment on finance), one was replacing incorrect tyres, one hit a horse and was killed and the family sued the owners of the horse which failed. Finally sued Ford and won. Only the ABC checked facts with Ford before going to air. That didn't mean the story was unbiased. The commercial stations just reported what they wanted. Did several set-ups on senior Ford staff. Interviewed on one topic then just and spliced the answers into a different interview. Had an interview in a house rather than a studio to be on neutral ground. House belonged to reporters daughter. Ch 7 & 9 got into bit of strife over the Capri stories.

I bought a Ranger last year... I am hoping this is a 'one-off' occurrence and not something that necessitates a re-call... what a pain in the rear that would be nonono

What, with all the burnt out wiring they had a few years back. If they had been a little more serious they could have ended up like this one.

I saw this one on the back of a truck on its way to Melbourne. It looked a bit of a mess.

Harvey Firestone & Henry Ford were big time partners and the Firestone & Ford Companies kept this going. There was a huge family & business bust-up after the tyre issue.
