I don't think you could get an answer to that question has we are all different , We all travel different do different thing , It is the same for people who are still working on the same wage some spend more than they earn , Some save money and some spend what they earn , So how long is a piece of string .

One thing I can tell you it does not cost us any more money on the road has we spend at home , But we do not do big klms all the time main thing is to budget how much you want to spend on fuel each week .

To give you a rough idea, I travelled 25,000km around Australia earlier this year all inclusive cost for 1 person including fuel accommodation sight seeing food spent $30,000 in 7 months

Hi Rob. This is a question just about every nomad asks others at some stage and its really impossible to give you any sensible or helpful answer.

Obviously it depends on things like:

1. How much fuel you burn and how much per litre you pay for it when you fill up each time - there can be differences of up to around 25c a litre (diesel)

2. Where you decide to stay - free camp, show grounds or lower cost CPs or top end CPs - $0 to $60 a night

3. What you choose to eat or eat out and where

4. Entertainment expenses

5. Unexpected - vehicle repairers. Usually exclude things like vehicle servicing and medical - these are costs you will have when you stay at home (usually)

The best way is to nomad the way you want to and try to keep a record of how much it costs you over a period of say 3 months. This will give you a rough idea of your yearly costs

We find that we can save enough out of our pensions to have a cruise or two each year. Alice

Our last trip on the road for 12 months (348 days away & just got home a few weeks ago) we averaged $120 a day that was for the 2 of us and our dog all expences, fuel & repairs. We never kept any real records so I could only base this on our income for the period plus how much we dipped into our savings.

We mostly free camped and our motorhome gets around 5 to 6 k's per litre (302 V8 auto) @ 85 - 90 Kph. Total distance travelled 24500 K's.  I'd say fuel was our major single expence.

I can tell you. My cost balance out exactly with my pension. Not a cent either way.

We are probably lucky that the British Govt (out of the kindness of their hearts) pay Keith a small pension which cover the cost of rego & insurance for our M/H.

Some time it can depend on out lays people have , We don't drink, smoke or gamble but eat well which we prepare ourself , Someone told me it is cheaper to stay in a caravan park for a extra than to pay for the fuel to drive all day , So if you free camp and smell the roses it would be a lot cheaper than driving all day

We spend a total of around 6 months per year away on trips varying between 2-7 weeks. We spend most of the time out in the bush by ourselves doing nature photography, bush walking & fishing so camping fees are minimal. Back at home our utility bills such as water, gas & electricity drop considerably while we're away making up for the extra fuel cost. We stay at each location for at least 3-4 days to really get to know it. We don't suffer from ''white line fever'' so we don't use a lot of fuel. We eat & have the occasional drink while we're away exactly like we do when we're at home. It all evens out to very little extra expense for us.

We live permanently on the road and free camp 5 out of 7 days average. When we drive we only do a maximum of 150klms in a day.Why rush.We live well and both enjoy a drink and have 2 small dogs.We average our spend at $850 per week. Some weeks a little more(if we do the tourist thing)and some weeks a lot less if we stay put in a free camp for a week or two.Hope this helps you.

Thanks for all the replies. It is an out there question. Like i was thinking along the lines of Keith and Steve lots of camping 4/5 days and working on about  $ 100/150 per day and taking small km trips each time we move on so not a lot of ks. But its still a dream, hoping for a chance one day cheers. Still lots to think about.

As said..We have never actually added things up.. But we seem to have more money in savings when I get home ..
No major repairs .. 8m turbo diesel motor home .. We free camp when we can..
Fuel consumption isn't too bad .. Large long range fuel tanks .. Drive way interstate before refuelling .
Pays to fill or top up when price is right .. 90 to 100 kph .. The hills we take real easy as fuel consumption
Triples pushing 6 ton ... With solar at home with HWS turned off . It pays my power bill..
Some weeks could be $700 depending distance travelled and fuel bought..
But the next week is almost nil... Depending on food and milk ..
