Windows 10, how's it running for you?

Hi Santa. I waited for my computer techo son to run W10 for a couple of months before I changed our laptops over.

I agree with you - very little difference from w8.1 and has a few w7 features in it

Overall, very happy and didn't have problems, other than listing all my Internet Hub listings (like The Grey Nomads) in alphabetical order. I use Yahoo for my email, which means that I have to scroll down for some seconds looking for it. Sounds trivial, but just a few really minor pain in the butt things with the change. I also had trouble getting my head round their use of the term Apps rather than programmes when I went looking for an existing programme to uninstall or change and to find new ones.

Hi Santa, I have run W10 as well. Had a few glitches with the touch screen and the LT shutting down, but alas all is in reasonable nic now. It's a nice human interface and easy to use so no more complaints from me.

I envy you all, as I still can't get it. I've got ASUS laptop and all-in-computer, only a year old.

Obviously they aren't compatible with W10.

Jamjar, that intrigues me. I would have thought that any computer with Win 8 on it would be OK to convert. If you can give us the model numbers we may be able to check things out for you.

We took the navigators machine (Win 7) down to her daughters place on the weekend. The download hung up a couple of times. In the end it came good very late in the night so I did not get the configuration done. I finished that at home, switched all the options off and it seems to be going OK. We will go back and switch on anything that seems to be required as we go.

We're loving Windows 7. We bought a new system for our home a few years back mainly because it came with Windows 7. We only set it up early this year, it was still in the original boxes. We're talking about a HP system worth around $4,000. It's working beautifully. We keep getting reminders to ''upgrade'' to Windows 10, no way!

I accepted the offer from Microsoft when they first sent the update notice. I have the icon on the task bar. I regularly check it and get the message that they will let me know when it's available.

The advantage is that by th time I get it all the bugs will be sorted.

I've now finally updated both my lappys to windows 10 ..

1 from 8.1 and 1 from 7.

Now .. I was waiting and hoping for some indication that the 8.1 unit would tell me from the "reservation" that it was ok to upgrade ..

my impatience lead me to check that all previous "updates" had installed as normal .. shock .. horror .. there was one that was continually re-presented for installation but failed each time .. (check yours out .. Jamjar)

when I presented the error code to windows, they suggested that I do a manual download/install on the machine ..

It all downloaded and upgraded fine ..

.. the upgrade from the windows 7 (which windows couldn't reserve) I downloaded a disc image which allowed me to burn my own w10 upgrade disk .. it went well too.

both are running fine now .. both are noticeably much faster than before .. ongoing teething problems are ok !

I just checked and all updates have been successfully installed.

I checked on the ASUS site and yes there are compatability issues.

May be OK if you're upgrading an existing Win7/Win8.0/Win8.1 installation, but not so great if you buy a new computer with Win10 pre-installed which I recently did for a friend. Couldn't find a way to import emails and mail contacts, that were previously exported from the old computer, into the new mail program, and in the new browser your favourites aren't kept in the Favorites folder like before (too obvious), but in another Favorites folder at the end of a Byzantine path that passes through folders with names that are unpronounceable or bear no relationship to the browser itself. Seems to me like a repeat of Vista - a deadline was set and it was released on that date - ready or not. I'll be sticking with Win 8.1 until Microsoft gets its act together.

The unit I upgraded from windows 7 was also an ASUS (G75V).

Although it could not be reserved by windows due to apparently not meeting compatability, all my checks found all necessary upgrades had been achieved.

This was why I decided to download a disc-image and proceeded to try an upgrade myself ..

It went through .. slowly but without a hitch .. (but I have been caught out before playing hero .. hehe)

but after upgrading from 8.1 to W10 I still needed to have a list of my contacts (address book entries) on hand to manually enter them later .. (into Mozilla Thunderbird)

That worked ok too .. (FYI)

this is a handy (free) Menu that you might find beneficial if you're staying on 8 for a while .. I used it.

For all those using Mozilla products I suggest you install MozBackup. It carries all your setting from one machine to the other.

I stuck to Win 7 Ultimate. I do a move to Win10 but hated the background updates you have no control over.

I am lucky though as I can switch between win7 and win10. Having an iMac with Bootcamp and a bit of software called Winclone allows me to switch between these. Just have an archive of Win7/10 and load the one I want.

When finished with Win7 archive it and load Win10, same for loading Win7.

Only loaded win10 for Visual Studio Community software for some development work.

In general still happy with Win7..

We have now been running windows 10 on laptop and tablet for about two months and am very happy with it although still learning to get the best out of it overall rating at this stage 10 out of 10

Had windows from 95 until vista with how long it took to start up to only having about 1.5hrs battery time to countless restores for no good reason expensive programs and virus protection after much research got a Mac Pro book and i luv it and made hi def movies with just the preloaded software.

Installed 10 as soon as it came out and ever since, I wished I had stayed with 7, stuck with it for months.

No browser would work correctly and other problems, then all of a sudden everything started working OK, so there must have been an update that came through and fixed up whatever was wrong.
Exactly the same happened with a netbook but only had to endure problems for about a week then it came good.

What I don't like at all is the inability to turn off updates and if you only have a small download allowance you can blow the lot on one download would like to be able to turn off updates until back on Wi Fi.
I wish I had never changed from 7 there is no great advantage in changing at this time.

I have windows 7 on my laptop and windows 8.1 on my Lenovo tablet. I prefer 7 as it is uncomplicated. Hate the mail program on 8.1 and a few other things, like no back arrow or cross to close things. Apparently it is not possible to install win. 7 on the tablet or I would.

In my previous post I should have added for Jamjar's information that my new lap-top is an ASUS. As I am technically deficient, I can add my son who set up this computer said he installed windows 10 on his personal, home computer but not in his office as the monitors there would not be compatible and he did not yet want to go to the trouble of having them upgraded or whatever. Likewise a chap who I got to for computer use instruction said he installed indows 10 on his personal, home computer and it would not properly work because his monitor also needed adjustment to make it compatible. But he has installed Windows 10 in the office he uses to instruct. Sounds all too hard to me, ut this lap-top with Windows 10 is working fine (except for my fingers regularly hitting the incorrect key...and can't blame Windows 10 nor lap-top for that!!!)

You can turn off updates but not as easy as it was and I do agree with you that it is a back wood step, I did a clean install of win 10 and have not had an issue. Firefox works perfect and I use Thunderbird for emails.

My mate accepted to upgrade his win 7x64 desktop to win 10 and it has been a complete failure, I spent hours trying to get it going correctly to no avail, I rolled it back to 7x64 and still have issues so I'm getting off his data and going to format and reload win 10 clean install.

Windows 10 is spying on you.

Sneaky Microsoft renamed its data slurper before sticking it back in Windows 10:

This year Microsoft introduced background tracking services called DiagTrack, or the Diagnostics Tracking Service. It was added to Windows 8.1 installations as well as betas of Windows 10. It arrived without much fanfare in May 14, in the shape of a patch, KB3022345.

It was just one of several slurping enhancements added via the back door.

The data that DiagTrack collected was typical of a spyware programme. The only way you knew you were being monitored was by eyeballing the list of running processes in Task Manager. As Microsoft explained:
Examples of data we collect include your name, email address, preferences and interests; browsing, search and file history; phone call and SMS data; device configuration and sensor data; and application usage.

Users thought it had disappeared in recent Windows 10 builds -- but it hadn't. Microsoft had simply renamed it.

The sinister-sounding tracking app was now the beatific and caring "Connected User Experiences and Telemetry". Once again, it needs to be disabled manually (this time through the Services control panel).

I have 2 laptops. One is an MacBook Pro & the other has windows 7. I had windows computers for years & changed to Apple for the better graphics & colour in photos.
Then I realised that I couldn't run Corel Draw which I use for design work.
I had 2 alternatives ... buy Adobe Illustrator, over $1,000 or buy a windows notebook for a few hundred dollars & keep that for design work
I bought the windows notebook.
I'm now concerned that a windows 10 update might not be suitable for my Corel Draw which is now 4 or 5 years old so I have not upgraded.
The other concern was where would i get the download capacity to firstly download the upgrade to 10 & the constant large updates from Microsoft.
I'm frequently out of mobile internet range for months at a time so I could imagine my download allowance being gobbled up as soon as I turned my internet on.
For now I will stick to my Mac & windows 7 on my notebook
