.Help me out here, regarding the GST that is being talked about ,raising it from the current 10% TO 15 % to raise a projected 65 billion $$$$,s next financial year to fill a financial black hole curtesy of past governments .Should it be reasonable to expect it then ,the year after 2017 -2018 to go back to the current 10%.Seeing as how they have recovered the dept passed on from the past. I maybe not have it rite ,but once they have recovered the dept ,I cant see why we should continue to pay this extra from now to eternity.Thats all tear me to bits.JOHN.

Halve the bludgers on disability payments and welfare .. What next ? 20% in 20 years time ? Trouble is we've sold everything off ..
Nothing left to sell...
Of course they'll go back to the 10% after the debt is written off. When they do I'll post an image on here of the Giant Pink Elephant that's in my back garden. LOL.

A few years ago I was talking to a German tourist & he told me that the gst there was 25% but there was no personal income tax. He reckoned that it encouraged greater productivity.
Hands up those that think the whole world in general is fast slipping into a big black hole from which there is no return ,We may as individuals be ok, but if you look at what is going on around us we are in a hell of a state (just my opinion).

As long as our tiny population (a bit over 23 million) continues to demand the best of everything i.e. roads, hospitals, NBN, water, power and Centrelink not to mention free camping area's in every rural town our taxes will continue to rise, someone has to pay.
I can hear the cries already, but not me, i paid taxes all my life, time I got something back.
We as a nation are living well beyond our means, the age of entitlement.
15% GST is the easy way out. If you are going to increase GST why not 12.5%. How are we going to be compensated. If it's via tax return, you pay upfront and wait till you do your tax return. In the meantime you are out of pocket. The only fair way would be for low income earners to have a card that can be scanned at the POS and be GST exempt. Obviously an administration nightmare. Has anyone got any ideas or insight as to how we will be compensated? Why do we have to follow what NZ is doing. Their cost of living is a lot more expensive then here. If it was/is so good, how come so many Kiwis migrate to Australia?

What a load of tripe all that is needed is for the privileged to pay their fair share and stop companies and pollies rorting the system.

Why not halve the pension as well and while your at it send all the Kiwi recipients back home that in itself would save billions

Let's hear exactly how you would go about paying off the national debt Kev.
Santa said, " Let's hear exactly how you would go about paying off the national debt Kev "
I think it was last night on one of the daily after the news shows that it was quoted that, Politicians are costing 40 million Dollars per year in retirement benefits. It may not pay off the debt, but that would be a good starting point. Hockey alone is getting $160,000 / year, now that the tax payer has paid off his wife's million dollar mansion.

Look at this way, add 15% to your now tax level and that's what you will lose out of your gross income 48cents +15 =63% now that's disgusting i9n anyone's world .
If we reduced the number of nothingness courses available at Uni's and made those wanting to do such courses pay up front each year and only fully fund those courses that are listed as a need for Australian Industry then the bill would come right down.
Any parent that thinks their child will be set for life with a BA really is delusional , if they don't go on to do at least a Masters then they may as well have left school in year 10.
Governments have increased the school leaving age as a means of hiding the true unemployment figures and industrial closures as did Labor when they made Uni entry open to all.
Ask any lecturer and they will tell you the system has been dumbed down to suit mass education and no longer strives to achieve excellence, BA's today are in real terms of employment opportunities the equivalent of the old intermediate certificate at enormous cost to the tax payer.
More waste is seen in NSW when Government can set aside $16Million to locate and track sharks when there has been less than 10 deaths in 20 years and then the Feds are spending $40 million on super for women in the workforce.
Don't start me of the cost of redundant pollies that is just dead money in anyone's terms and what $ that can be identified is only represents the tip of the iceberg

If it's paying for our ''baby boomer'' pension like they say , bring it on. We both turned 65 recently & a few days ago received our first age pension payment. Some-one's gotta' support us, we've been supporting the older generation while we were working, now it's our turn to be supported. If it means enlarging the GST so be it! Yes, we know that we'll be paying it too.

What about the self funded retirees? We've paid taxes all our working lives, supporting aged pensioners and the unemployed. Neither of us are entitled to age pension, why should we still be paying for others that didn't or couldn't put something away for latter years. I hadn't planned on retiring at my age at the moment, but have been out of work for 13 months, and I can't get a cent from the government in unemployment benefits. Sometimes I think you're better off just sitting on your bum and not bothering saving anything, just collect the dole, then go on the old age pension when you qualify.
I got my seniors card a few months back and sometimes get a small discount from participating shops, but the government is forking out for any of that. And I keep forgetting to use it most of the time

We retired at 60 & have been ''self funded retirees'' for the past 5 years. We're only getting a small ''part pension'', we've got too much Superannuation & too much money invested mate.

Then that statement makes no sense. You receive a small "part pension" but are willing to pay extra GST to fund it and others

The part pension that we're receiving more than covers the proposed GST increase with plenty left over.

No I wasn't referring to you Aus-Kiwi, but I was having a go a your perception that all disability and welfare recipients are bludgers and as for the ( Kiwis can't get welfare ) well that's not true if they have lived here for 10 yrs they can under the Australian New Zealand social Security Agreement.
So, when was this age of affluence when we were all living beyond our means? I must have slept through that one. Unless you're talking about those that had bags of money anyway, and in most cases still have. Let them pay for it then.

If find it hard to reply to that unsympathetic and non-constructive comment without using four letter adjectives. Probably why so many people are leaving this forum.
