Well, after much soul searching (and some tears), we decided it was finally time to update the trusty old van. We finally went for one of those fancy European models. I'm sure you will all agree she is really something! (see avatar)

A family friend years ago built his own caravan. It was made from plywood, and he clad it with aluminium. Steel drawbar. The funny thing was that he made it in the gap between his house and the side fence. When he finally pulled it out into the back yard, he realised he had made the door on the wrong side! It didn't get much road use - it was meant as accomodation whilst he built his holiday house at Phillip Island. Last seen (30 years ago), it was still there, the aluminium in almost pristine condition, the drawbar totally rotted away. I imagine that the Pengiun authority has probably removed it by now.
Well Jim, that's right neighborly of you. I'll take you up on the offer next time we see you. And I especially wanted to thank Teo for his kind comments, but the old girl had a teeny bit of rust here and there and I was concerned that she wasn't going to handle off road for much longer. I'm now mainly concerned now about a comment that erad made about his friend's home made van. I notice now that my new van has the door on the wrong side too. I guess we'll just have to climb out the window.

Haha........love the pic !! If you took a van in that condition to a Big 4, they'd probably pay you heaps to go stay with an opposition CP.
Interesting the increasing number of vans of this vintage (but restored to their former glory) on the road nowadays. We've got one in our local CP at Brookton (country WA). It wouldn't be any bigger than the fine specimen Stratman has pictured, but has been restored and painted etc. Down the door side is a large "Australia" sign ) guess that's in case they take the wrong turn and end up in All Blacks country and across the front a large "Nest" sign. Being towed by an older Holden ute and the weight balance is all wrong.
Watched them drive into town and the front wheels on the ute were close to being off the deck and the bum was down with the tow coupling only a few inches off the road - wonder they don't get pinged by the blue boys and the scallies all the time - theyre so obvious
