Buying trip to Tassie

I am off on the big boat (The Spirit) to Tassie on Saturday (31st).   Taking my little Dingo camper (which performed well on the 10 day trip to Mildura Country Music).  I have planned out the scariest bit (getting through Melbourne).   Booked into Burnie Ocean View C.P.    Anyone got any feedback on it ?   $24 for a powered site and they have free wi fi, camp kitchen and a heated indoor pool according to website.   Will be viewing properties from Ulverstone to Smithton, up and down the North West coast.   1 to 5 acres with houses, or maybe I will have to buy some land and build if I cant find just the right house to suit me.  Wish me luck.   .... Val

G'day Val, I reckon your timing is right. I was sent from Kalgoorlie to Beaconsfield in about 1985 to help get a Gold Operation up and going. It was the last week of June and first week of July, and I was working the night shift 8pm to 8am. On 1 day the max temp was 4 deg, and every puddle was a sheet of glass, and after 2 weeks the boss said you can go back now. He then said, go down to Hobart and book into a motel for a couple of nights and have a look around first. I said you mean I can go back home? I jumped from Beaconsfield to Adelaide, and got on the plane back to Kal. Tassie is probably a nice place, but my experience was not quite up to specs. For the benefit of any locals it was Golconda, yeh I believe we left a bit of Cyanide laying about. Not me but the Company.

Simmo.

I'm trying to say my name quietly.

Boy the penny just dropped, and that was 30 years ago,,,,,, history.

G'day Val

We had a month in Tassie late last year - our 4th or 5th visit since 1983

It's a great place to visit, and -yes- heaps of people live there and really enjoy living there

All across the top, from St Helens on the east coast to Arthur River on the west coast, there are many delightful places to settle if that is your aim. Towns medium to large, villages of only a couple of dozen houses, it all depends upon how many neighbours you want

Down the east coast to Orford, it's all still very lovely ... so you have plenty to look at

Just a suggestion - when you get there, pop into the local newsagent and pick up a copy of the Tassie Road Atlas for $35+/-.  It gives heaps of maps as well as street directory for many Tassie towns, incl all the 1-way streets littering places like Launceston & Hobart

Have fun :)

Phil

Thanks everyone for your good wishes and advice. I will be sticking to the North West coastal areas as, on research, they seem to have best rainfall and good soil with lovely gardens. Yes, Old Crofter, I got your PM and sent off a reply saying 14 acres a bit more than I could handle and 2 storey may get difficult as I am now into my 70s (just). Also age pension cuts out once you exceed 5 acres. Maybe my reply to you went astray, or maybe I didn't do something right in trying to send it (never done one before). 3 more days to go (counting the days). Cheers everyone. .... Val

Good luck Val - hope you enjoy yourself and Melbourne is not to daunting (try to avoid week days and if you are doing weeks - avoid peak traffic - if youre not used to it, the traffic is manic.

And good hunting for your perfect place - let us all know how you get on :))

Val,
Not trying to be negative, realistic maybe, you are going to Tassie around the best time of year, suggest B4 you buy, try spending a winter over there if you have not done so already. To me many mainlanders have bought in the best times and regretted it after a winter.

In my younger years spent 10 years in Tassie (NW) and loved it, have visited 4 or 5 times since.

The first thing most people ask about Tassie is it must be cold down there. My opinion is that the climate of Tassie is the best part of it for me. The coldest months are usually only August and Sept. What most people who have never been to Tassie is the sun intensity is much greater than on the Mainland. i e 23degrees feels like 28.  There are much colder winters in places like Orange NSW. CANBERRA etc. every area has a season that is not too pleasant such as excessive heat, humidity, dust flies etc  I visited in 1995 and moved here in 1997 from constant excessive summer heat. A great place to live and good rainfall both east and west in northern Tassie.  Cheers

I have no idea what you are looking for, more details may help. I live in Penguin in middle of north west coast of Tassie. If you don't like the cold, watch the elevation. Once you get to 300m above sea level you will have cold winters. Avoid anything exposed to the south west, that is where the winterly cold weather comes from. How far do you want to live away from civilization. Anything within 10kms from the Bass Highway will be popular and pricey. I would say between Latrobe and Wynyard would be central.

Keep us informed with your progress.

Great write up on the attachment Chris - I knew I should not get there too early as nowhere to park, from other peoples comments on the forum. Figure I will wait at Wallan on outskirts of Melb. till about 4.00 pm then head for the boat, turning Rt at M80, then Rt at M1 and over west gate bridge, then exit W5 from Fwy to Cook St, Todd Rd, the Boulevarde and Beach St to Station Pier. Hope my timing is right. Thanks everyone for telling me how cold it gets but it could not be much colder than Benalla in Winter - weeks of minus 1, 2, 3 and 4 degree starts to the day. Though I must admit once the day warms up there are usually blue skies and sunshine. Thanks for all your good wishes. Cheers .... Val

Val, re waiting for the boat. You will be hitting Melb peak hour traffic. Although you are coming "in", those roads can be pretty congested that time of day. Might you be better to come round the city (or in via Seymour, Yea, Yarra Glen) and park up somewhere like a supermarket car park in one of the nearer bayside suburbs, for a couple of hours or so, then just have a fairly short drive to boat.

Have spent quite a bit of time in Tas, and my family is from there, so know much of it. I love the area around Wynyard to Stanley. Would be my pick for an area to move to.

Wendyv - I thought I would be OK with it being a Saturday - boarding starts at 5 and closes at 6.45 pm (not that I would want to get there THAT late). Maybe I will start out from Wallan at 3.30 instead. Thanks Wendy. .... Val
