Hi Dolly Most information centres have water that you can buy...some are free. We've paid as much as 20c per litre for water in our travels, but usually it's much less. I have looked on the websites, and there's loads for NSW and WA, but haven't found anything for Queensland.

Try Info Centres and some 'free' camps have water as well. Creeks, dams, lakes etc. Even ask at servos when filling up the tug. I filter all drinking water first though. The rest doesn't matter so much. I don't travel with my tanks with water but if staying anywhere for a length of time fill them not far away from where I will be staying, if I can. I also carry 3x10lt containers of fresh water just in case.

You can find water everywhere, free camps, town parks, info centres, service stations, dump points but only if it is a second tap a bit further away with Potable Water sticker.

For example, parked in Nyngan at the dump point, just a few metres further along is a second tap, good water I have tried it.

Another example Sapphire in Queensland, next to the free camp are public toilets, dump point and swimming pool if open you can get showers. Across from all this is metered water 10 cents for 20 litres. If you are lucky the previous person may have left enough in the metre for you to get it free, or the other way round and you leave some extra in for the next person.

Another example, The Botanic Gardens in Emerald, Just at the entrance to the gardens is a water tap, good drinking water, free.

Wiki camps is your friend, water will be marked on the site if there is water in the locality.

One reason a lot of people go to caravan parks is to do washing and fill up the tanks

We've been on the road since June 11 and have never had problems getting water, and we've only been in three caravan parks in that time. We manage to get water (always legally, of course) to do washing without going to a caravan park. If I wanted to be a sardine, I'd arrange to be canned!!! Caravan parks surely cram people in like sardines!!!

Yeah, plenty of water out there.

Been on the road for over 4 years and only knock back was the council office at Alice Springs.

Got it at a servo there though.

G'day all....

Water being such a necessity in life I find it interesting that it would be denied in all but the most arid locations. Having said that......what are the consequences of for example just filling up at Alice springs council offices....say 100 litres to the value of $1. and you offer to pay. What Police inspector is going to authorise a prosecution to the value of $1. for starters once you offer to pay there is no offence of theft. Speaking with service station attendants I am told that the police don't even have time to investigate "drive offs", so I don't think there would be much interest in $1 worth of water. Come on all the ex cops....would love to hear your opinion.

Cheers

Recently came from Darwin to Perth & water was our only issue. Every tourist bureau had water available at a cost, shame they were all b$@ody closed !! Asked at the servo's before filling up with fuel & never got a knockback. Some remote places had limited water but still allowed us to fill our drinking water tank, washing water we filled from other sources. Spend a lot of time in remote locations so the ability to pump from a creek or dam helps.

Reminds me of the story; When a man asked a young socialite if she would go to bed with him for a million dollars, she said yes. He then asked her; Well what about ten dollars? - Of course not said the socialite "What do you think I am" The man replied "we have already ascertained what you are - we are now bargaining for a price".

Theft is theft - whether anyone will/would prosecute charges is irrelevant - Most of my fellow travellers obtain water by asking at service stations they are refuelling at or buy from information centres

Thanks everyone Yes there are so many ways to obtain water and most people are so obliging We have just arrived in Dalby with full tanks that we got in Leyburn near Warwick but think it is bore water.....just has that taste Still alive though, so can't complain Will check with the information see what they've got. Certainly don't mind paying for it. Might also start making a list and posting to all at a later date Cheers

We have traveled the Aust outback for many years and have never experienced a problem obtaining potable water.

As others have said, service stations are usually a good bet, ask before you fill up with fuel, don't expect to drive into a service station and fill up with water without spending a red cent.

If your really stuck ask at the local information centre.

Even out around Longreach recently where water is a scarce commodity we had no problems.

Getting off topic a bit but we don't like to miss anything when we travel, and regardless if a town has a free camp or not we still stop and have a look about. If the town is bigger and there is a lot to do we stay in a park. A bit of a recce will tell you if the park has big or small sites and most parks away from the coast are rarely chocka block, Other times if we want some down time we go and find a free camp. To me water is a bit like a free camp, they are not a God given right just because we travel in a caravan

we've been on the road pretty much for all of the past 18 mnths and done half of WA and SA, VIC and NSW (just scratched the surface in each of them). Never had a problem getting water, but if we cant filter it, we don't put it in our van tanks, but rather in containers in our Ute that will hold 100lt. We then boil the water twice before we drink it/brush our teeth in it (and if we've run out of bottled water that we always stock up on at Coles or Woolies).

Moat of the country servos will let you fill your water up if you buy fuel from them and smile nicely when chatting with them. They are a font of info about food, meat, coffee etc.

Many of the larger towns have an Info Centre and they supply free water or charge a small fee of $2 or whatever.

But remember, many of these smaller places will tell you they are on scheme water (treated and supplied by the council/shire or state water corp), but often it does not look or smell that great. If it smells strongly of chlorine, let it stand for a day or so if you can and the chlorine dissipates and the smell and taste vanishes

I always turn the tap on at a servo or Info Centre or wherever for a couple of seconds. Often the water pipes are rusted metal and the first few litres will be brown and smelly before it comes clean - not something you want in your RV water tanks
