Has anyone tried or know of spots to wet a line at access points along the Nullabor Hwy to break the trip along the way.
Been so remote It could be rewarding if one had a safe place with out placing myself in dangers way. When I view the Head of the Bight, it gets me thinking if only I could wet a line.
LOL. Got a really long line. Those bluffs are pretty high. From Eucla you do drop down and cross a long plain before rising up to the plateau again, but I am not aware of any roads out to the beach.
I did stop at a large gravel dump on the western side where you could probably get down near the sea but ........

If you have the time and don't have a van or, you are prepared to leave your van at a roadhouse along the way there are numerous tracks to the coastline.
Have a look at Google Earth and pre-select your possibilities from the comfort of home.

Jim. We came across there a few weeks ago and stopped overnight at the Eucla CP. One of the staff there had about 4 surf casting rods and raced around his work so he could get down onto the beach. There is an access road (which I assume is public) through the CP which is about 5km long and in good condition. Then there is a walk through the sand hills and down onto the beach. Don't know if he catches anything as he wasn't talkative - couldn't even manage hello - but he spent all his time down on the beach......just remember to take the cask red wine with you to wash the sand, salt water and perhaps some fish down )))

The Head of the Bight is locked off when the whales are not around. When they are you are restricted to the viewing platforms.
I don't know what you class as the Nullarbor but technically its only a small section you cross as you travel across the Bight. If you can stretch the range as far across as Ceduna there are a few spots you can drive to within walking distance of good access from Ceduna to just past Fowlers Bay, good fishing has been reported along this stretch.
As Bruce reported, there is access around Eucla. I think the cliffs have abated by the last few camp spots just east of Border Village. From Eucla, drive down the descent to the plains and at the bottom of the hill there is a good track that goes past their airport to the old telegraph station. You should drive down there just to have a look at the old station (history lesson.) There is plenty of beach along there. If you go onto Google Maps you will see a few tracks that go to the waters edge from Eucla to Madura Pass.
Yes I have viewed from the CP myself. I drove down and across the flats towards the beach in 2000. their are a few boats around the Burbs if you take a walk. Nothing flash but does the job I guess.
No one their talks about the fishing there, however on the hotel menu there is allways KG whiting to be had.
From next year we will be able to stop and smell the Fish, instead of going like fish out of water.
From the Ceduna end the fishing from the beach, west of Flowers Bay has very big Jew fish in beach gutters. I have read many stories of great trips just to fish for them. The guys use Quad bikes to travel the beaches looking for the gutters.
I was thinking more to the west again. Yalata Road house is on Indigenous land and does have tracks leading towards the coast, so one would need permission to get access. I could just imagin the fishing to be had in close where the pros don't venture, would be gold.
If the fish don't co operate Bruce, it will be Fishfingers & chips. Have no fear Bruce, all fish fear me and walk on water, that's why we keep a box of the FF in the freezer.
I have the right gear that can get my bait to the fish then any other means possible. Hooking them not the problem, its getting them in.
No PMs, I prefer to share via the open forum, or not at all. That is what forums are about...... You need a 4WD and good maps - preferably 1:100,000. Our favourite spot was Mexican Hat because it was a beautiful spot to camp with sheltered water great beach and good swimming), but there are spots all along the coast west of Fowlers Bay. The further west you go, the less rocks (snook, KGW, silver whiting, salmon, tommies, abalone) and the more ocean beach (mulloway, salmon). We only fished from the shore. Those with boats tend to operate from Fowlers Bay, but the coast to the west is much nicer. The further west you go, the sandier the tracks get.
There is also a track that follows the vermin proof fence south to the coast from near Yalata.
Should say we have not stayed in these areas for a while now......
The blue lines are our GPS tracks for one trip....
Mexican Hat. Cheers, Peter

What a beautiful part of the world. We did a trip to Flowers Bay about 10 years back, the January the year of the Canberra bush fires. It got to 54deg in the sun. We sat in the southern ocean with our Mexican hats on our heads.
I would love to travel the same as your map and enjoy at walking pace.
Thanks so much Peter for sharing with us, your adventures.

Head of Bight gates are locked from about 4 pm until around 8 am but you can camp there at the gates if self contained. It is a commercial enterprise now and I think costs about $15 pp. Have been there both when whales around and when not. Worth going in I think.
