We're buying a 4x4 motorhome and the vehicle comes with a 140 litre compressor fridge but there is an option for a 120L 3 way fridge. If we have solar panels (3 x 100 Watts)do we need a 3 way fridge (keeping in mind that we will be following the sun). We do want to camp wild as often as possible.
The 3 solar panels are not the full answer. You will also need 3 batteries to carry the power over during bad weather periods if you like to stay put for a few days. Do you have enough load capacity to carry 3 batteries @ 35 kg weight each? I would also consider upgrading the solar capacity as well if you like to stop in the one spot for a week or more.
If you like staying put and not carry the solar/battery weight then (and only then) go the absorption fridge.

Hi Addy,
Depending on affordability, suss out Lithium batteries. One 200 AH Lithium and a 40 Ah battery charger will replace 3 batteries and will save you weight. Depending on your usage, 3 solar panels maybe enough. We have a 220 litre Isotherm 12v fridge and our whole system keeps it going day and night. We found parking under trees or even filtered sunlight will affect the solar charging from the panels. Cloudy conditions seems to be OK unless it is raining.
cheers,
Robyn
