G'day. About 40 years ago, when I was a mere 32, I was driving extended tours out of Melbourne. We took tourists, virtually, all over this vast country. One little town, named Terowie, (SA) I found fascinating, mainly because this was where the American General, McArthur stood on the rail platform, and announced, "They pushed us out of the Phillipines, but I shall return!" During the 70's quite a lot of my the passengers had served in WW2, and were surprised to learn that this was the place that the famous announcement, that echoed right around the world, was made. If you find the time to drive into this almost deserted town, it's like stepping back in time. Unfortunately, I'm told local councils / polititians can't find funds to improve the towns appearance. It's between Burra and Peterborough.
I know Terowie quite well. I lived 16 Klms from Terowie for 12 years. Most of the population there are unemployed - the power meter reader told me about 70% of the houses have had their power disconnected from not paying power bills. There is so much rubbish including wrecked cars laying around in the yards. If residents cleaned up their act maybe the local council might do something about improving the town. One thing I guess you can by a house for around $35,000.
It's an area you certainly keep everything under lock and key.
Quite often at night we would hear vehicles stop outside our hobby farm. Turn on 4 500 watt floodlights and they disappear rather quickly.
If you do happen to visit Terowie make sure everything is locked up tight.
Also there is no mains water. Every one relys on rain water or bore water.
We had problems with water going missing.
The last 4 years our apples would be nearly ripe and would go to Adelaide for a day and when we would get home the apple trees would be stripped. Not an apple in site.
Last year the pear tree was stripped also.
Terowie is under Peterborough district council. If you look at Peterborough it's not much better then Terowie.
Thanks Pipes, We were there 12mths ago. Ended up staying the night at Peterborough. Didn't realise the connection with McArthur, not that I care too much for him. We did find that whilst it looked like a ghost town, everything was neat and tidy and nice old buildings. Nice free camp at the railway station.
Chippy.
Yes, we stayed there Wed night as my partner, Jennifer, wanted to see the places I took people to all those years ago Basically, the town hasn't changed in 40 years.. Nice and quiet apart from the wind.
Regards.
