Hi All, Just thought I might post a short bit of info regarding Motorhome insurance for similar people to myself, by that I mean I homebrewed a sort of Motorhome about 10 years ago I bought an old Toyota Dyna short wheel base truck bought it home and with the help of my good mate The Boilermaker/welder and employed the services of several registered Engineers set about converting the Toyota short wheel base to a long wheel base throwing out the rapidly dying 3B diesel engine and replacing with a 202 Holden petrol engine fitting also lpg, then set about purchasing an early 80's Viscount Caravan cutting out the front part and neatly hoisting it on a prepared bed on the chassis of the truck. So after several Engineers Certificates and Full over the pits inspections at Vic roads their Engineers decided to Register the Vehicle as a Toyota Motorized Caravan. HaHaHa
NOW INSURANCE after ringing the usual Motorhome Insurers and listening to the person at the other end of the phone constantly saying " It's a What " ah "we don't have that on our list" I decided to join the CMCA where I had no problems after producing all the Engineers Certificates to Ken Tame and received agreed Value full comprehensive Insurance with a reasonable Excess this continued for about 10 years until this year when I started looking at actually how many times I use this vehicle a year even though I have travelled to every state of Australia several times it averages out to being on the road only about 6 weeks a year without any incident or claim. So at this point I decided I don't need Full Comprehensive Insurance my only fear whilst on the road is Totally Destroying the Latest Model Ferrari and then ricocheting into the latest Model Winnebago that was Bush Camping on the side of the Road!! So after weighing up the fact basically Its not a new Vehicle I service maintain fix anything that breaks and drive I decided to Investigate Third Party Property Insurance which only covers the Ferrari and Winnebago and not "My Little Baby", After hunting around like a Rabidness affected dog I finally found SUNCORP Insurance who were only to happy to offer TPPI with 20 million dollars cover and was delightfully surprised with the Premium being not even one third and excess less than the other insurance.
I am sure that I am not the only person that has a "Not New" vehicle, and feels that Full Comprehensive Insurance is really not needed and hope this post help some other similar Greying Traveler in similar situation
