We've been touring the NSW central coast for the last 3 weeks and for the first time at Grassy Head (s of Macksville) we are having reception problems. Different parts of the park are so bad you cannot receive anything. People here have expensive Wingards etc and ones the rotate and go up and down but still have trouble. We moved our van till we got tolerable reception but it still goes patchy every now and then. Signal comes from Coffs Harbour (about 80km). So, our aerial is the type below - cheap but it works as good as any others here on some vans that are fitted out like gin palaces. These units have a booster and are light enough to put up every time you camp which we do. www.ebay.com.au/itm/UHF-VHF-Digital-TV-Antenna-Aerial-w-High-Gain-Amplifier-suit-Motorhome-Caravan-/140804125829 Good Luck.
EDIT....forgot to add that at all other places from Newcastle to the Gold coast we have always had dozens of channels to choose from.....Grassy Head is just in a bad location (but a beaut spot!)

I also have a "jack" and like Dougwe have had a good run with it. It's probably like you stated some spots just flat out don't have any or good reception, so it becomes pot luck. Not wanting to go off topic we have just changed our foxtel box to mystar hd at the house and we've now suddenly got next to no channel 7. So perhaps someone could explain that because foxtel don't want to know about it.

Ashley
I have an NCE digital antenna, supposedly the bees knees but it is very selective and some places get nothing other everything
Best option is a satellite dish in top of the roof, expensive but guaranteed reception
