Every time we pass through freezing cold Ballarat we comment on why anyone in their right mind would want to stay in such a dismal location. Each to their own though.

Emma tells me so far we have 102 as at 10.20pm tonight. Thanks all and please keep it up. Any freedom camps we can support helps everybody across the country eventually.

Regardless of the merits of Pioneer Park, I support all free camps and low cost CP's and have signed.
C'mon the rest of you - get off your butt and do the 2 minute finger exercise in also signing it !!!
Don't just sit back and whinge when eventually there aren't choices and you will have to stay in CP's at $40-50 a night with bouncy castles, swimming pools, lots of empty cabins and handkerchief sized sites etc

Ballarat gets an unfair wrap for weather. Given that it's 400-500m above sea level, the average temperature is supposed to be 4-5 degrees lower than Melbourne or Geelong but rarely is that much lower. Ballarat can be hotter than Melbourne in summer. A recent item noted that the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne have a colder & wetter (more wet days & more rain) climate than Ballarat. Some of the recent press about Ballarat's weather has actually referred to places as far away as Trentham as being Ballarat.
My personal choice on a free camping in Ballarat would be at Warrenheip on the east side of the Western Highway coming from Melbourne. The new tourist information in the middle of town is probably not the best site for that and it has been suggested by many locals that the information should be at the mini-golf / big shed on the highway (at the 80kph signs). There should be plenty of room there for both day stops and overnight stops. There are two petrol stations, a restaurant, a couple of shops, mini-golf & a pub all in walking distance. I'm sure free campers would spend a bit of money there. Between the Council & business groups, I reckon this should be looked at.
The need to to talk to the people of Port Hedland in WA - the opened a free camp a few months back, and it was very well patronised, with all doing the right thing as far as I know. It was closed, but the people had been keeping receipts for a month - and some astronomical amount (extra) was spent in the town - like $100,000 in a month!!!!!
Madness to close it down.
