We are heading off to Lawn Hill Gorge and wondering whether to stay at Adel's Grove or actually in the NP at Lawn Hill. Also need to o/night at Julia Creek. Any comments?
We are going there next year and our preliminary research says that the NP is cheaper and more attractive and that even if you are told that it is full, go in anyway as that might not be the case.
I look forward to reading your findings.

Hi Kim and Gary, We were there in 2012. Not sure what the prices are now but we think there are pros and cons. Adels Grove has plenty of shade, swimming available, shop, fuel etc. Lawn hill also has the swimming, there is no travelling to and fro, wasn't a lot of shade when we were there. Hopefully someone who has been there recently may be able to give you and update. As for Julia Creek, there is a good free camp on the edge of town with a walking track into town. Bave fun. Chippy.
We were there in May 2013. We stayed at Adels Grove and since it was hot when we were there we felt it was a good choice as we had a very shady spot, right by the river for swimming. There is basically no shade at the National Park sites, which of course can be good for solar if the weather isn't too hot. At that time of year there were very few people around so we had a large area all to ourselves, there were only a couple of people in the National Park at that time. Both I understand can get very full in mid season.
At that stage the road up to Adels Grove was reasonable gravel road with a few minor corrugations, the road between Adels Grove and the National Park was extremely corrugated and we were very glad we hadn't taken our van the extra distance.
We were there last July and stayed in the Nat Park, not a lot of shade but just a minutes walk to canoe spot and swimming plus lots of walks, a fantastic place I can't remember the cost but it was't a lot Adels Grove is dearer. Most of the roads were good except for a section outside the park. I'm sure you will like it wherever you stay, we also camped at Gregory Downs on the river, a good spot our Avater picture is from there. Enjoy Bru

We were up there last Month - definitely leave the van at Hotel in Gregory, and go to Lawn Hill and Adel's on a day trip, the food at Gregory pub is great and reasonably priced (we stayed for a week after intending just an overnighter) - Adel's is definitely not worth the price with cold showers and long drop toilets.

Adels Grove had hot showers when we were there, flush toilets, washing machines etc, its actually a very nice amenities block.
Personally I think Lawn Hill has far too much to offer for just a day trip. We spent 3 days/4 nights, on the first day we went canoeing up the gorges , the second day we headed out to the Riversleigh fossil site early then did a couple of walks later, on the third day we did the hike which goes to Indarri Falls and back above the main gorge. It was one of the highlights of that trip.

Thank you all. We do have an off road 16.6 Goldstream so hopefully we shall take it through to the park. But thanks for the thumbs up on Gregory River.
