WASHING CARAVAN

How, all,

I have 'Vantec' on my CV and the people that did the job say to use their special super duper cleaning liquid. This is fine as they supplied some.

What do other people use to wash their van  that has 'Vantec' applied as the supplied bottle will not last long.

Looking forward to the answers.

Keep Safe out there.

Gday...

Doug, I too have Vantec on my six-year old van ... I have only used this product on my vehicle/s (for decades) AND now the van as well.

Van's exterior still looks like new. I consider Vantec the best investment I made when I got the van built.

Neither the van or vehicle get washed more than twice a year as it is almost impossible when one 'free' camps predominantly to have water for such purposes. cry

I thoroughly and confidently recommend the product

Cheers - John

Yeh I use that on the Collie John but thought it my be a bit harsh on the 'Vantec'.

You showed me your van when we were at Greens mate and that is why I had it done.

Gday...

I was told many (VERY many) years ago when I woz a lil fella (I am still the same height but got older ) that the best way to wash your vehicle (and in our cases - caravan) is to firstly use a hose with a strong, concentrated water jet to rinse off all the surface dust/grime.

Then wash with using a sponge and bucket of water with (in this case) Wash & Wax in it and rinse off immediately with gentle flow water from hose. Only wash a 'panel' at a time eg an area about a metre by a metre. Do not wash in direct sunlight if possible ... and not on a hot day.

Then when finished rinse off with clean water, with hose on strong spray - not jet.

Then, with the vehicle, chamois off the remaining water ... but I don't chamois the van ... I really do not have either the height or inclination.

There ... now that I have told you how to suck eggs, you can get out in the beautiful Townsville weather and get the van and Collie all purdy.

Cheers - John

Because we use a metal road to access the house sit we are currently at, our DMax is now a dust white with patches of mud. Our 'van is not too bad, but can do with a wash off.

Im planning on going to a commercial car wash and washing the van and DMax with the hand held pressure hoses. Van will fit underneath and wont stand too close to the 'van.

Anyone see a problem (its aluminum and checquer (yeah - spelt wrongly) plate?

Not sure if you would get the van into the car wash at Batemans Bay bigB, if it's the one near "My Club" (Soldiers). Not sure of any others in the bay.

I would have thought a high pressure gun would be a bit harsh on the Ali of the van too.

I have thought of doing that but they all look too tight to get a van in.

I will be washing mine next week in readiness for the big departure from Townsville at end of month.

I was once told by a car detailer mate of mine was that hotish water was the killer ,as it removes the surface grime and surface treatments as well .I only use tempered water and a good detergent as Rockylizard above does ,works for me.

Doug. Being of sober habits, I don't know about your secret mens clubs and also grogging clubs around the country lol

This one is behind the old Woolies and opposite the town centre hall and book museum.

I asked the guy who runs it what the height is, obviously as well as eyeballing it. He reckons its about 500cm higher than the highest point (air con) on my 'van and it certainly looks high enough.

I would normally wash the van before I leave the house sit we're at, but its 15km of dusty metal road until we're on the Princess H/W and about 20 mins south of Batemans. By then the van would be just as dusty again. Every time I drive the DMax into town, I have to wash the canopy rear window as its just coated in dust.

I don't intend to get close to either vehicle with the car wash high pressure hose - I'll be standing back at least a metre or more - it just to get all the metal dust (and a little dried mud off the ute).

When we were at Melbourne we were in a CP with gums overhead that dripped gum all down the side (a constant source of conversation over the fire and drinks each night it was the trees or possums in them to blame). Nothing would get it off and one of the other nomads put us onto Gumption. It took all the marks off with only light wiping using a throw-way cloth. Three months later - there are no damage marks on the paint work. Cheap as chips in your s/market cleaning isle

Gees bigB, you mean to say you haven't taken MrsB to "My Club" for dinner and assist with the financial status of the business side of my life???? I just might have to get my bestest brave to sharpen his scalping knife and send him on his way to Batemans Bay. He will find you from there. Then he can cut across country via the Clyde Mountain to meet up with us on our way down the Hume.

Just down near the water from the cop shop Bruce. Big place over looking water. Big car park. Asian and Aussie food and great prices. You just need to go to reception desk and get your driver licence swiped and in ya go, lasts 7 days. Just do it again at end of 7 days as you are not a local. Pokies there too if you like those. All the usual things in a club. Nice selection of Reds too. I think you will find the car wash you talk about might be at the end of the street along side the club too.

I used to live in Batemans Bay. Make sure you take advantage of the courtesy buses each club provides.

They will pick you up from your door and then bring you back home to your door. Its a great way to get around BB at night. Gold coin donation.

Cheers,
Naomi

Thanks Doug and Naomi - I will try the soliders club - the golf club out towards Batehaven are doing $10 lunches - I wonder if that's just rabbit food for that price.

Naomi, we're about 14km down Runnyford Rd (the old HW) and then the farm driveway is another 2km - suspect the bus driver will want lots of gold coins to take us out there.biggrin

Dougie - I think its the place on the land side of the road just down from the cop shop - big place on the main road and the side road that goes up to Harvey Norman and the old Woolworths and Centrelink. Two story with lots of glass - will go in and suss them out (mention your name - bound to get me thrown out lol).

Hi Dougwe

I am a bit slow about reading your post when I saw it I thought to myself here is a grown man of worldly expirence with 2 Indian Slaves why would he need help to understand how to wash a caravan, its to do with Vantec OK good question. They don't  want you using harsh chemicals on your caravan, good point.

I add cleaning vinegar (at around a dollar a litre from major retailers) to my car wash soapy water, I can't  tell you how much probably 3rd of a bottle, to wash the van. It seems to make it sparkle that much more and nice to touch when I am finished. I like to take my time and use my chamois to wipe the van down as the water here in Brisbane will leave water marks and the vinegar seems to helps in this regard.

I remember last year when we picked up our new ute the salesperson gave us a bottle of car wash nicely marked with there logo on it for use with there paint treatment which we had paid for to be done to the ute knowing the ute was going to be parked outside a lot. Sole reasoning for getting the treatment done was not needing to use soap ever again or polish, all wrong, with out going to a chemist to have the contents of the bottle checked any blind freddie would say soap in that bottle is the some in that other bottle, putting 2 cap fills in buckets of water it did the same thing, bubbles and soapy. But it is a nice red bottle and goes with the colour of the red car and it's a nice size to take with us on our travels and then when I get home I decanter some out of big bottle into the nice red bottle to go again.

Dougwe use a small amount of automotive wash, get your salves onto it and sit back and watch, they will do a good job I am sure.

We also had a very good time in Batemans Bay, the Services Club dining was very good. Our 5 nights stay was brought about by car failure and paid for by our roadside assist membership, repairman was most helpful, tow truck operator going out of his way to park our caravan in the C/P site, the one near the bridge and assisting wife to put the pop top up, awning out for shade, water hoses and power cord on while I was dealing with the gearbox failure at the repair shop, the rental car people. It was a excellent out come from a car breakdown and of cause  they all made money out of it but it was the nice way they did it.

Have good day and take care. Ralph.

Thanks Ralph.

You are correct is in saying the bit about why does a grown man need to know how to wash a van. You are also correct in the harsh soap comments.

I take a lighter view of life these days and even though most of my comments here are of the lighter nature at things I thought I would ask the question on a open forum so that others might benefit from the answers as Vantec is no way cheap and even though I was supplied with a bottle of washing additive from Vantec I might not be in a area to get another bottle, plus I should imagine it not being cheap.

I noticed in Autobarn the other day 'Armorall' had a wash that was lower risk and for memory was green.

As to your red bottle, I have seen many moons back, different colour bottles that are supposed to be for different colour cars, some sort of additive to help maintain colour of car. Not sure if they are still around though or actually worked.

See, I can be serious sometimes biggrin

Add some ( 1/2 cup) Kerro to the last wash.. Detergents wash all the oils out of paint .. The Navy used Kerro on all their vehicles close to the sea.. Prevents rust big time ?. Most our trips are near the sea..
