travelling

hi all,

I'm on the road. in nt at present and intend heading to s.a end of the month.  I have wickicamps but would like to pick your collective brains about good, reasonably priced - or free - camping along the way.  I'm thinking of taking a bit under a week to do it. don't need to do the tourist bit so it's just a means of getting where I want to go in a leisurely fashion.

and isn't that how we all do it?

travel safe

Frednme, really can't help with specific spots. There are others that have done the NT that will be able to help you there. I would like to say though I have discovered Gravel pits. They are wonderful. Usually off the road a bit, level and relatively dust free because there is blue metal around. They are now on my look out list. Not sure what the road works are like in the NT, but certainly another alternative camping area to look out for.

SA have the worst free camping spots in the country !! Sorry guys, but we've been in most of the States now and they either are so badly formed that you need a tank to get in, no ff road parking - barely enough to get off the sealed road or the rubbish bins haven't been emptied in months and no toilets.
However, there are some great reasonably priced CPs ($130 for a week), low cost and a FEW off road sites. I agree with shekon that gravel dump areas throughout all the States are great - stops the road noise, flat, and no vehicle bogging - we use them often.

But go with wikicamps. 99% of the time, its great !!

Mataranka is worth a stop just for the hot springs C/P
Renner Springs c/p
Banka Banka is a must
good overnighter at Attack Creek
Most of the roadhouse caravan parks are basic but cheap and ok
The transport museum is ok if you have a few weeks to volunteer
south of Alice they become fewer
Coober Pedy is worth a stop
Pimba road house is a free stop with coin operated showers.
There are a few more we stopped at but it was a few years back
