Is Kangaroo Island Worth Visiting?

Hi all

We are staying at Victor Harbor for a few months and therefore trying to explore the Fleurieu Peninsula as much as we can. I was wondering if Kangaroo Island is worth visiting. We looked at the brochures and basically you have to pay to catch a ferry, pay for accommodation (if we do go..not taking the caravan), pay to go into National Parks to see attractions and pay again to see the penguin or the seals.  Plus its very expensive during peak season...starting next month.  We have a limited budget so I was wondering is really worth it with all the cost involved to get a few good picture of rocks and wildlife at Kangaroo Island.  They are alot of lovely free national parks in South Australia to visit..that we are thinking of missing Kangaroo Island altogether.

Your thoughts on it especially people whovisited Kangaroo Island.

Thanks for your time. Lee-Ann

Hi Lee-Ann,  I found your write up on the costs involved getting to and while on Kangaroo Island.  We also have to watch our spending money and as we plan to visit Victor Harbour and all around that area this Oct. we need to sort out what we are going to do.  It sounds that Kangaroo Island will be a miss at this point.  There are always plenty of other places to go, see and experience.  Who knows, we may catch up with you.!

We have relatives on the island. Good place to go if you're a keen fisherman. There's really not a lot to do other than sight seeing at the ''rough end'' of the island in Flinders Chase NP. After a while one Sea Lion laying on the beach looks pretty much the same as the next. You're right about the extra costs involved to visit the island. If we were staying at Victor Harbor for a few months we'd be exploring the Mouth of the Murray, the Coorong & possibly as far SE as the VIC border. Lots to see along that stretch of coast.

Not worth the cost or effort, plenty to see on mainland SA without the expense.smile

We have been twice a couple of 10 day stays. Eril's Sister has a house over there and that entitles her to discounted ferry trips. With that and no accommodation expense it was WELL worth it. biggrin

Aussie Paul. smile

Lee-ann I guess its a question of whether you really want to go. We live here [in SA] and it really does irck me that we have to pay to visit places that are our own country. When we visited none of those costs applied so it was a lot cheaper then.   I think its a matter of deciding whether you want to see whats on offer. We have just come back from a trip to Darwin Kakadu Cairns and Kingaroy and all along the way my only response to those sorts of suggestions [about whether we should pay to see] was that probably we wouldn't be back again so we had to see what was on offer at least once.  And what we saw, all along the trip,  was just awesome. I guess you have to decide whether you'll be back!

Thank you for all your responses...we may skip Kangaroo Island altogether. There is so much to do in the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Already visited & explored the limestone coast and the Barossa Valley. In summer explore the Yorke Peninsula

Thanks again for your answers.

I loved Kangaroo Island and think its a must see, (my opinion). We didn't take the caravan across, just the car. Got a good ferry + acc deal that wasn't very expensive. Had a great time and would return.
