While I agree with Santa that Win 10 is better than 8.1, unless you're very computer savvy I advise people to wait until the retail version has been out for a while first. Compatibility with your software should definitely not be an issue, but drivers for some older hardware like wifi dongles are still a bit hit and miss.
I must admit that I did find the new start screen in 8/8.1 very awkward for the first few months, but now I've become comfortable with it I've actually grown quite fond of it.
Microsoft have however heard the complaints loud and clear and say they will be releasing an update for 8.1 'soon' that will bring back the 'classic' start menu we were used to in Win 7.
But, for those that are running Win 8 or 8.1, and just can't come to grips with it and don't want to wait for the update, have a look at this vid of Classic Shell, it's a little app that will bring back the feel of Windows 7, which is by a country mile still the most widely OS on the planet. It's perfectly safe, and free as it's donateware.
SnowT, in answer to your questions is YES to all except the age of my laptop which is a Toshiba about 5 years old, and yes again I do happen to have the rescue disks, and yes I do know what I am doing in regards to most things PC, so please enlighten me further
My sister who has basic experience and basic use of her computer which is on a small wireless plan . Last month she found her data use had been used up in the first week. After getting several phone techs to give not much help, she found there had been a single 3 Gb download in that week. She had not clicked on the Windows 10 offer at any time and has not clicked on any other offers etc.
A techo had a look into her computer and said that because she was using automatic updates on her current windows 7 it had automatically downloaded Windows 10 in preparation form for it to be accepted. That was the 3G download. That seems to be the current state of play with Windows. He claimed if you are getting the offer on your computer it has already been mostly put on it. Then if you click on the offered free new system it will be quick as it is already on your computer !! How about that for deception. After all it is just your data allowance they use up whether you want it or not !!

PS I looked at my update history. First time there Not sure what it all is but I see this did appear on the date shown.
Upgrade to Windows 10 Home. Installation date: 13/08/2015 8:53 AM. Installation status: Failed. Error details: Code 80240020. Update type: Important
This same statement has been made every day since then. Obviously it is trying to do something about an up date ?? It is interspersed with other successful updates for other programs.
Any comments ??
