Window's 10.. Stay away..

If you get the icon to instal your free version of Window's 10...

Stay away from it.. By downloading it you are giving up control of your computer and all of your information to MICROSOFT...

Don't Believe me..

Type " Windows 10" in any search and start to read the articles that are popping up..

Get your hands on a copy of the EULA..  Terms and conditions and get a lawyer to go over it...

It basically says that if you agree to their terms They own the ability to load up ANY update they want... They an see ALL your data....

Hope you read this...

A snip-it..

The Unanswered Questions

So why are people so suspicious about the free promise? Again because Microsoft has not helped itself by remaining silent over key questions. Namely:

  • Do free Windows 10 upgraders get a licence key?
  • How much of your PC can be upgraded before Windows 10 thinks you have a new PC and asks you to pay?
  • Can ineligible users simply buy a cheap edition of Windows 7 Starter and use it to get a free copy of Windows 10?
  • Why were Windows Vista and Windows XP users left out? (this baffles me)
  • Will a Windows 10 subscription model exist in future for those who miss the free upgrade window?
  • Will Windows 10 charge for any updates or upgrades to the system that add major new features or functionality?

Most of these probably have sensible answers, but no-one knows and thats a crazy situation to be in just over a month before release. Even more so given the official answers we do have are brilliant:

Hope you do your own searches about Windows 10..

Me I'm going to stay away.. and if and when they decided not to support Windows 7 I'm going the Penguin... LINAX....

I have not yet upgraded to Windows 10 but with the continuing frustration level experienced with Windows 8.1 that may not be far away!cry

If you want to upgrade to Windows 10 you have to provide your product key. If this key has previously been used, you will not be able to use it again

Almost every other service tool that I use, such as MYOB, charge a subscription and that is not unreasonable considering the resources that go into developing and maintaining that platform. it would appear that Microsoft are going down the same route as Google and recovering these costs by selling advertising space. Whilst it is annoying to see ads popping up. I have just got used to it and ignore it.

It is possible to minimize the privacy concerns by adjusting the settings on Windows 10 see the following posts:

All you need to do when installing Win 10 is as I did...DO NOT use Express Settings when asked. When asked uncheck all boxes that try to give control to MS and you will be fine.

You are probably right John. Seems like eons ago that I had Windows 7 and only went to Windows 8 because I bought a new laptop. I reckon XP was the simplest and most stable operating system ever and is still used by the US Navy. In fact Microsoft only update it for them.

Unfortunately, Windows 7 will no longer be updated in the near future so security holes will remain unplugged. That leaves me with two options, Windows 10 or change systems away from Microsoft. I have already forgotten how to use a pen or pencil to write, how to post a letter and so many other functions that I used to perform so I am pessimistic about chances of me successfully leaning to use a new operating system. biggrin

It baffles me why people need to upgrade to the latest operating system. If you computer is doing what you want it to do then there is no reason to upgrade at all. I am running win 7 with only service pack 1 auto update is turned off for the OS and all other programs.

The main reason for updating is to patch security flaws in the operating system when they are found. Once a particular flavour of windows is no longer supported, the vulnerabilities will no longer be patched, so upgrading is probably a good idea once the bugs have been ironed out of it.

Steve have you read the EULA for Windows 10...??

I've read parts of it..

- I don't like that it wants to Auto update...
- I don't like the fact it can upload any program that it thinks it need's...
- I don't like the fact that it is a test bed for the business pr-release..
- I don't like the fact that if you don't like it you have to Reformat the Drive and install an old OS... it does not allow you to cycle back to say win 7..
- I don't like the fact it is also gathering PERSONAL DATA....

You can NOT turn updates off unless you trick it into think'n your computer is on a Metered WiFi.. But even then I don't think it will not auto update..

And what about the suggestion that in some time down the track it does not hold you to ransom to pay a Subscription fee... you do know that there is clause in most EULA's that say in plain words that "They may change the EULA at any stage they want to..."

So I'm all into waiting to do what ever updates I want when I know it does not Impact my freedom's...

I personally DO NOT like to be forced to get a Program that I don't want to...

- If I have to pay for something I will.. and I'm running 4 computer's and they all run Win 7 Ultimate which I paid for...

Troppy Windows 7 should be supported till at least 2020....

There is my Rant...

Gundog.. some windows updates are needed...

Just make sure that you select the updates you need...

Windows does drop some valid updates that you should get...

Just make sure you DO NOT Select KB3035583 as that is the update that wants you to install win 10..

Juergen

Psst if you use Firefox... Try not to update to the latest version as there does seem to be some stabity issues... Not happen with all platforms But we are having grief on one of the computer's..

I was unfortunately one of the first to update to Windows 10, what a damm mistake, everything went well until I got a message saying that my Intel Graphics Card was obsolete and the joke is there is no update for the Graphics card, why I mention this Graphics card was that my PC screen kept going black and telling me it was not compatible, so as good old Microsoft give you 1 month to revert back to Windows 7 I thought good idea so away I went, then the s**t hit the fan, yes it go back to Win 7 but alas no wireless internet, so rang Telstra to ask what to do and they say noting we can do but if you pay us $192 we will come and fix it up, so went away and thought about it and thought screw Telstra I will format my PC which is what I did and now I am a happy camper with Wind 7 working like a charm.

Now can anyone out here tell why me hell we all go and update to latest system when our current one is working well with no problems ????? I can possibly understand big business updating but not us local yokels

I suggest you all read this link. It is a Micro$oft site. It states that Win 7 support ends on January 14, 2020, Win 8 - January 10, 2023, and Win 10 - October 14, 2025. Let us get things straight and post accurate info.

hmm Peter, the link you provided referred to XP ... this one refers to all of the Operating Systems -

And contains and confirms your advice regarding the end of 'extended support'.

I just had my computer crash a few times with windows 10. Brand new laptop, window10 been on board for a few weeks and crash crash crash.

Rolled back to 8.1, VERY INTERESTING that you cant roll back if you have had win10 for more than a month (message received during roll back)

Now running better on 8.1. No wonder its free.....

Thanks MS but no thanks

Juergen, the two update options are Automatic (recommended) and Notify to schedule restart. If set to the latter it will not download updates automatically if you are on a metered connection. Microsoft is not in the business of stealing and selling your personal information. The uploading of data is to help improve the product... and that can be turned off in any case.

To clarify the difference between mainstream support and extended support, mainstream support means new features and improvements etc while extended means you'll only receive critical updates such as those relating to security.

There would be thousands of people all over the world that ended up in the same boat as you Hydeeeho, and as you found out the hard way, updating to a pre-release version of an OS is not for the layperson. I don't mean to be mean but those that are having issues can't blame Microsoft... only themselves. You should never update your OS unless you make a backup, preferably a disk image so you can easily revert back to where you were before.

If you're bored... go for a walk... if your 'puter ain't broke... don't try to fix it!

WE just bought two new laptops a EOF sales.  Both operating on 8.1 with the opportunity to upgrade.  Having been using 7 forever, did not like 8.1, so upgraded to 10.  Too many issues, too many things not compatible, so have back tracked to 8.1 and will have to learn to live with it.

Well windows 8.1 can be just as frustrating,,, 2 weeks ago lost a file during a windows update  something C++ was only partially updated.

Windows refused to run. Had to restore to previous, was a problem. Lost heaps of software and mail.

Made worst because software CD's are home,,ahhhh.

Starting with the original post, this thread is full of misinformation, I've yet to talk to an experienced PC user who has downloaded and installed W10 who is dissatisfied.

You need to be able to follow a few brief instructions when installing 10, as another poster said don't use the express option, select your own settings and level of privacy, the upgrade steps are simple and easy to follow.

No, if its a legal copy of Windows your upgrading from you don't have to provide a product key.

I've installed 10 on three different machines now without a hitch.

My suggestion would be, if you don't feel confident enough to do the upgrade yourself, pay someone to do it for you.

As for the emotive title of this thread "RE: Window's 10.. Stay away.." sounds like the OP has not even attempted a download! hardly qualified to make a sweeping statement like this.

I have found W10, like 8.1 to be a stable operating system only cleaner and more like the Windows of old, have yet to find a program it won't run, and let me tell you I've got a few odd ones.

Windows 10, I like it.biggrin

Hi Santa,

When I spoke about needing your product key to get a free copy of Windows 10, I was referring to Juergan's question about ineligible users buying a cheap copy of Windows 7 to get the free Windows 10 download. If you have not reserved a copy you need to get the Windows 10 download tool from the Microsoft webpage see https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10

It states on that page that " If you are installing the operating system for the first time, you will need your Windows product key (xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx). For more information about product keys and when they are required, visit theFAQ page."

This did not refer to users who have already reserved a copy.

I was interested to read your comments on the fact that you have installed W10 on a number of computers with no problems. My reserved copy is not yet ready and as I use my computer for business, I can't afford problems. Your positive report therefore, eases some of the concerns that I had. I really do not like W8.1!

David

Evening David,

I can understand your reservations re upgrading a business machine.

Each of my upgrades was from 8.1 to 10 and took approx 1.5 hours to complete, the PC restarts a number of times during the process.

Perhaps one evening after close of business would be your ideal time.

I would certainly be making copies/backups of critical files to a separate physical drive, if the worst were to happen at least your able to replace them without fuss.smile

I have been using 10 for two weeks without any problems, I did a new build with all the good gear for my desktop in April this year.

I'm on NBN and the download took about 10 minutes and installation about 20 minutes, got a little freaked out when it couldn't open any files, but I have a external hard drive which I save everything on to anyway and was about to roll back to 8.1 when I decided to check with the guys at whirlpool.net and it was suggested to restart my comp.

After the restart all was good. I have had no problems at all and changed all the privacy settings to 'off'.

It feels less clunky than 8.1, I didn't like 8.1 at all but I do like 10.

Back up your files on an external hard drive and make sure you have a restore point set if you want to try 10.

Cheers,
Naomi

Check here http://www.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/windows-10-faq#ui-id-23

David, the get Windows 10 app is an app designed to make the upgrade process easy. It checks to make sure your device is compatible, has information to help you learn about the features in Windows 10, and allows you to begin your free upgrade to Windows 10.smile

Santa not trying to burst your bubble, but I would NOT advise anyone to do anything to a business computer, unless I had DEEP pocket's....

For the simple fact if something goes WRONG.. do YOU wish to be Liable for Loss of DATA / TIME to recover the system etc.....

even thou you say to have back up etc... The amount of TIME lost trying to restore stuff is long....

SO I would NOT be advising about anything that affect's anyone business..

----------------------------------------------------------

My Second Post Was to an article.. that at the time had some valid Point's...

-- What happens if you need to reinstall Windows 10 --  Do you need to re-download it...?

From a Previous Rant...

I've read parts of it..

- I don't like that it wants to Auto update...
- I don't like the fact it can upload any program that it thinks it need's...
- I don't like the fact that it is a test bed for the business pr-release..
- I don't like the fact that if you don't like it you have to Reformat the Drive and install an old OS... it does not allow you to cycle back to say win 7 [ After 30 days ]..
- I don't like the fact it is also gathering PERSONAL DATA....

I don't like to change much about my computer's until such a time as I know they are stable..

- I try not to get Web downloaded component's unless I know I have a way of backing up those files if I need to do a reinstall at some stage...

End of Rant...

On a side note, we had had to reinstall windows in one of the computers and 4days later we are still loading thing's... Have not done all of the security updates as I have found out it is better to do them in small block's and doing the reset and check again..
