I see the Kiwi's are having two referendums on their choice of Flag for NZ.
The first referendum this year will be to choose an alternative flag preference from those chosen by a committee, the second referendum in 2016 will be to choose between the winner of the first referendum and their current flag. See;
All nice designs. Getting rid of the Union Jack , as Canada has done, is probably a good thing. I'm not a Republican or Monarchist but I think the Union Jack has had it's day on any flags of Comonwealth countries.
Irrespective of any preferences, the current Kiwi Flag is too close in design etc to the Australian Flag and has been confused by a lot of overseas countries when they have to fly it and they have often flown the wrong flag or used the wrong one as a stage backdrop.
Be interesting to see what the result is in March 2016.

Yes, the Union Flag (Union Jack) is the combined flags of England, Scotland and Ireland (Wales was considered part of England at the time so was not incorporated in the flag design), hardly relevant to NZ or Australia IMHO.
Whatever NZ decides, I wish them well, whatever they choose (current or other) they may not get another opportunity for a very long time, if ever.
I've had a close look at the designs for a new flag and must say, there are some good ones there,
I agree, it's about time the union jack was dumped, it has very little to do with N,Z, I would like to see the Silver Fern and the Southern cross on a new flag also retain a dark background preferably a deep blue.
Lets hope the final colours are symbolic to N.Z. with some reference to the Maori population, and not some Gordy colours of a cheap design.
Lest hope they get it right the first time, as you say VIC, it may well be a long time to change it again should they get it wrong this time round.
maybe something like this..........

I notice a lot of Kiwi's in Oz have a fern decal on their cars and it looks so smart as a symbol and no doubt shows their pride in being from NZ. Are you entitled to vote on it KJ ?
I was wondering how Kiwi's living in Oz get on with voting on the subject.
No can do VIC, I left N.Z. before I was old enough to Vote, therefore I am not recorded on the role over there, as far as a registered Kiwi living or holidaying over here goes, they should be able to have their say by putting in a absentee vote, I presume through the Consulate in Sydney.
"Yep" I've also seen the Silver fern on the back end of many cars owned by Kiwi's over here, in fact I have had one of the ferns sitting in my draw for a couple of years now, bought it to stick on one of the caravans I have owned but, never got around to doing it, I keep changing vans too often, LOL

I like the fern too, you could always put it on your tug, too good not to use it.
OT, but this is the link that shows the Union Flag aka Union Jack (when used on Brit Navy Ships) does not have a symbol (cross etc) for Wales on it, only England, Scotland & Ireland. Wales was considered at the time to be represented by the English cross of St George, see; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_United_Kingdom
At the close of submissions for alternative NZ Flags, they had received 10, 292 entries, see this link for all entries, the majority of which have now been whittled down by a Flag Consideration Panel to 40, that 40 to be further whittled down to 4 for the first referendum see;
