We decided to replace our faithful Getz last year.  60,000 km & only minor problems.  Lousy trade in from all dealers.

The Getz had been a great basic vehicle.

Looked at the full range of Hyundai as a starting point & then went thru most of the mid priced, mid size cars.

Liked the get up & go of the VWs but were put off by their hard working tiny motors & need for premium fuel.  They offered great warranties but I would be concerned about costs after warranty.  Although we liked the reputation of Toyotas, to us they were 'stale'.  ie. need a makeover.  Not into Fords & Holdens (unreasonable bias perhaps)

All this is rather subjective of course & I'm sure that others will have quite different views.

In the end we went for a Mazda 3 and couldn't be happier.   Although a bit dearer than the Getz it has a far better feel about it both in appearance & ride/comfort.

Having said that I can see how people love their Hyundais.  Certainly value for money.

I bought a Hyundai i30 in 2012 after owning VW Golfs for years and it's the best car I've ever had.  So much bang for your buck and it hasn't missed a beat since I got it.  Their reverse camera and inbuilt GPS are great quality.  The only negative I have is the quality of the AM radio.  FM is fine but I listen to lots of AM.  That's only a minor thing though.
