Port Hedland free camp closed

The free camp at the show grounds in Port Hedland is now closed. I asked at Visitors Centre if it will reopen and they are not sure.

There will be a Counsel meeting at end of month and a decision will be made then. August is festival month and that was excuse for closure.

Local opinion is reopen next month as counting of shopping dockets show it was a gold mine for the town.

Was up to 100 vans and motor homes a night, and locals were very happy with the way they parked and the cleanliness of area.

Will try and find out next month if it will reopen and post results.

Sandy

oh dear - what a fizzer!! Having been based in Hedland for a couple of years, this doesn't surprise me. The council is so factional with differing private agendas. They have got used to Rio Tinto and the State govt pouring money into so many stupid projects (like their recent very expensive pool complex that closed almost immediately as it did not meet safety requirements).

Lets hope common sense will prevail and they look at Karratha as a city that is about to collapse due to reliance to the resource sector (in this case the Chevron gas hup which will close in a few years). Sadly the resource sector towns in WA always anticipate unlimited funding from the govt and the mining sector

I can't see why Rio Tinto would be pouring money into Port Hedland. They only have a salt mine there. BHPB and FMG are the big players.

How much time did you really spend there?

The Reo Tinto website tells a different story.  http://www.riotinto.com/iron-ore-158.aspx

Pilbara

Our Pilbara operations including a world-class, integrated network of 15 iron ore mines, three port facilities, a 1,700 kilometre rail network and related infrastructure are designed to respond rapidly to changes in demand, supported by our Operations Centre in Perth. Were expanding our operations in the Pilbara to epic proportions while introducing next generation technologies to deliver greater efficiency, lower production costs and improved health, safety and environmental performance.

Tommy, FYI Rio ship from Dampier and Cape Lambert. Other than salt from the public wharf in Port Hedland, there are no Rio shipments through that port.
