Some are, that are close to towns (walking distance), so I have been told. We have stayed in a few, and usually $20 or less. I think North Pine (Lawnton, Brisbane) is $25, or $140 for seven days, with a $25 amenities key deposit. Convenience is the reason here, close to so much.

I think lawnton is worth it as it is so close to Brisbane and the train. cheers. rocket.
Slightly off topic but on our recent trip that included SA we were planning to stay at Mundulla showgrounds but apparently the town don't welcome RVers anymore & want the facility removed from Camps Australia Wide due to ''non-payers''. A glimpse of the future maybe? Freeloading is stealing!

it seems to depend a lot on the influence CPs have on the local councils or shires as to whether or not showgrounds are available to camp at or not, and then the various committees that run them as to how much they will charge and the quality of the facilities.
We have stayed at some showgrounds that charge $20-25 a night with filthy facilities suitable only for TNT and patchy power and limited water outlets and others for $15 a night with proper power and water and clean facilities for $15 pn.
We always have a good read of the feeback on wikicamps before we use showgrounds. Sometimes its better to use a CP

Bruce's comment "it seems to depend a lot on the influence CPs have on the local councils or shires " is spot on. We stopped at the Roma showgrounds. certainly not within walking distance of the town. Facilities are basic to say the best about them, cost $30 per vehicle per night. I commented to the ranger that the cost was over the top for the site, his answer " The caravan park has set the price to the council, it would be unfair to them (the CP) if the showgrounds charged any less." The CP is a lot closer to town than the showgrounds and costs $35.
Yes Roma is a rip off, we stayed at Emerald it's $25.00 pn fair sort of walk to amenities but they are nice and new. Most showgrounds we stay in are around the $15. to $25. mark which suits us, better if around the $15 as we are self contained. We do stay in van parks but try to get deals stay for a week or off season discounts.
Some towns though do have a showground but are closed to camping as the van park is owned by council or the local councillor.
The ACCC might be interested in caravan park operators who get voted onto Councils and influence the fees to be charged at showgrounds. It's anti-competitive and illegal. Maybe the caravan association should write to Councils and advise them of this and suggest that any park operators who are Council members should absent themselves from meetings where this sort of issue is being discussed.
Hi all,we are staying in Roma tomorrow at the Roma Gun Club, new park and prices are $25 per night, stay 4 pay 3,will let you know how good or bad it is soon.
