No wonder a lot of us like free camping, we have almost completed a trip to far nth qld going up via the inland and coming down the east coast. the truckies and the people one meets whether on the road or in camps are helpful ,friendly and enjoy the company of others. On the coast however in caravan parks if you are not a long term stayer reply to hello is a grunt .two park owners insisted we had not booked. in Sarina even the staff at the chemist were rude as well as the caravan park.would not stop again.
Yes, we've found the same sort of thing. Most free CAMPERS are friendly. There are a few GLAMPERS (snobs) in CP's but most are OK.
We camp out in the bush by ourselves most of the time. The wildlife doesn't have a hierarchy system.
It takes nothing to smile & say hello. Met a couple of GRUNTERS on our recent trip. LOL.

We're at Geraldton WA at the moment & the local tourist place gave us a sheet for local free & lo-cost campsites
We drove 10 mins out of town to "Fig Tree Crossing" and met up and chatted with several other travellers - was great
Beaut toilet block, shelter shed etc, space for a dozen or so campers no worries, all nice & flat ... real beaut
We have had good and bad experiences in caravan parks, but mostly good. An owner of a caravan park tried to charge me for going away for 5 weeks so I cancelled the booking, he said it was a holding fee for the spot we were on. Went to another CP.
We have had some huge fun and met some great folks at both CPs and free camps.. so goes life..

Did I miss something or did you expect a caravan park let you leave your rig on site whilst you were away from it for 5 weeks & not charge. I don't think you would expect or be game to leave you rig unattended taking up space at a free camp for 5 weeks.

I now see your grievance as the CP would not have kept the site vacant for 5 weeks you were going to be away & would have only needed to have it vacant on the day you returned. A small fee for their inconvenience or an advance booking should be the norm. Grey fox: We live on 30 acres here in Tassie & get our remote time at home & quite like CP that are within walking distance of towns (Pubs) & beaches when travelling. Last winter to North Queensland as far as Cooktown for three months & the winter before to the SA peninsulars & Cooper Pedy, Broken Hill etc. & averaged about 70% CP & 30% free camping and found many Glampers & Grunters in CP that found either us or our Mercedes Sprinter Campervan beneath their small minded high status values. People with similar rigs to them in free camps did not share their reluctance to be friendly or social. Fortunately we have enjoyed many happy hours with great people in CP & free camps over the years.

Not all of the "snobs" are necessarily snobs, some people are shy( yes, even grown ups) and others can be sick of being ambushed every time they step outside their van by one of those pets who jump in your ear the minute you do.
