Hi all, just wondering what calibre are the roads generally that lead to or are in the majority of free camp sites. Would you recommend full off road, semi off road or will standard leaf spring/coil and shock absorber suspension suffice as we have only just ordered our new chassis and possibly will still have time to change it. Will we also need to change the coupling to allow for more movement for rougher conditions? - thanks all keep safe.

When we went around the block last year we stayed in 47 free camps and all had excellent access and no need for anything other than a normal car and caravan.

Don't worry about this issue too much as most are easy access if in camps books, but from time to time are rough and/or wet and then we can't get in there also with offraoder.
If you miss a couple who really cares there are plenty out there not even in the camps books or apps.

We like free camping very much. We had a full offroad indpendant suspension hard floor camper that suited us very well. We only needed to tow it over the shoulder of the road to get to where we wanted to be. Over their in the distance to the left.
Out of site, out of mind. Quite and private. The further in away from the road the better, 1km is good, as no one know's your even there. We also turn the unit so all lights are facing away from the road.
The ground CLEARENCE, going in and out is the most important in consideration for where you want to camp, if not in provided areas.
We take delivery of the new van in December, again we full tandum trailing arm independent suspension.
This will still take us where we want to be with out the extra setup of shower / toilet.
At our age and into the future, I am over preparing and cooking the lot out side with the flyes and bugs getting into every thing. Especially sharing my glass of red.
PS: Two hemp sand bags tired to the old broom handle covers our entry and exit tracks on the shoulder.
In the past some folks can still see us in the distance and look to see where we entered.in the first place.
Jim and Lambie your idea makes the most sense of all, go where you want to, do what you want to and then when you leave just cover your tracks and no one is the wiser. Absolutely Perfcet. Way to go !
