Perth to Broome (Return)

We are finishing up our house sits in Perth this Friday and will head North for about 6 weeks. More interested in the journey as opposed to the destination. Hope to spend 15 days heading North a week in  in Broome and then head back taking our time. We will mix it up with both free camps and caravan parks. Looking to make the most of the West Coast, as well take in the Wild Flower season.

Looking to hear from any Nomads who have recently been this way and can recommend "Free Camps or Caravan Parks". We have Camps 8 and Wiki Camps. Always good to hear from others who have experienced a "good stay" and keen to put it out there as to say.

If you prefer free camps then you would be advised to take the inland route not the coastal route.
Much more to see and do anyway.

Cheers,
Peter

We have just travelled down the inland road from Port Hedland to Mount Magnet & across through Mullewa to Geralton, not a lot of flowers out as yet, especialy ground covers, however the banksia"s & wattle's are in some areas.

In Perth ATM.

Most free overnight spots now have toilets, dumps & tables. Definitely prefer the Newman road - but all good.

Haven't traveled the coast road yet but no way am I going to travel the Inland road again ,we drove the whole road at 75kph and other than the mounds of rubble ,well, there isn't much more. Couple of small CPS . We had a blown gearbox so I wasn't going to stop and site see ,others may have more experiences.

Had no problems coming up the inland road with the road trains or trucks. The road for me was fine and I am not in a small vehicle. 26foot motorhome, towing a little car. Turn on the radio and talk to the truckies. Loved the inland road, the little towns were wonderful with so much history and interesting things to see and do. Don't just drive through, stop, get out and have a walk around and talk to the locals.
Took plenty of pictures of wildflowers just starting to bloom. Realised I am not in the peak of season but still plenty to see, if you take your time. Heaps of free camps and the little CP's are great value.

Coming through the Pilbara to Port Hedland, spectacular and a region that I will explore again at a more leisurely pace. Port Hedland was told there was nothing there, It is a great spot for a couple of days. Once again so much to see and do and although I would not want to live there, I loved it.

Currently at Pardoo Station, booked in for a week and stayed for four. It is a fishermans paradise, I don't fish but I have loved every minute here. I am moving on on Wednesday and have researched the coast road and looking forward to exploring the little towns along the way and there seems to be plenty of camps and spots to stay according to Wikicamps and Camps8.

Tonight I was privileged to see the sunset over the ocean for the first time in my life. Tears were flowing. Have seen it rise over the Eastern sea but never set over the sea.

So I guess it is all in the eye of the beholder. Take your time, stop and look around instead of driving on through some of these places. One might be pleasantly surprised. I may a little biased also, I have fallen in love with Western Australia, it is so vast and different to anything I have encountered before.

And now for those promised pictures of the sunset, just so Doug does not head off to the optician.
