Another learning curve re wire sizing...


A couple of months ago I bought some 6 B&S cable, well that is what I asked for. Today I went to buy around 15 meters of 6 B&S for van projects and the guy showed me several pieces that did not match what I thought was 6 B&S!!! He gave me a couple of samples of 6 and 8 B&S. The short bit is what I was given couple of months ago as 6 B&S!!!!no

I remember this time last year Paul, I put the Collie in to get something done at TJM and asked for 6B&S cable and that I know the difference. When I went to pick up the Collie crawled in underneath to check the job and BINGO not 6B&S. I said to please do as I asked. They said it is what they normally use. I said do what I am paying for. All changed and off I went a happy camper IN THE END.

If you need auto wiring check out this web site.   www.agwholesalers.com.au     he has 6 and 8 B&S wire. it is not listed on his web site, .  8 B&S twin core $5.50 a metre.  That about half price to the next best price I could find. 50 amp Anderson plugs 4 for $11.

They are at Greenmount south of Toowoomba.

 

I was at his warehouse a week or two ago and he had plenty of 6 and 8 B&S  wire in stock.

Hard to find 6 B&S locally In the shops where I live not even at Jaycar

Last time I ordered Anderson type plugs they were 10 for 15 Dollars By BitDeals on EvilBay
cheeper to buy the compleet set than just the lugs what go in them

The cheepest I found were 3 dollars the 2 pins

Just be aware that some of the "Anderson Style Plugs" aren't as robust as genuine Anderson Plugs. Plating on some of the cheapies is a tad thin too.

 Your cheap plugs are no good without the wire. What you save on the wire more than makes up for the cost of the plugs.

John   Go to an auto elec place they have all size wire normally,,, up to wire as thick as your thumb at least (used for diesel truck jumper leads)

Hi all you helpers. It appears that when I got the brake controller and fridge line added last year they have used 8 B&S to the 12 pin plug. The Jayco wiring for the fridge and Setec aux input appear to be also 8 B&S.

Am I correct in assuming the fridge would be drawing more current than the DC to DC charger as we drive? The solar is also charging the batteries as we travel.

 

I am thinking of running a second parallel line of 6 B&S from the 80 amp dual battery isolator for the fridge and use the already fitted 8 B&S to a DC to DC charger at the house batteries. I will parallel the Jayco wires that feed the fridge and Setec to supply only the fridge.

Hi Barry, one of those wire is between the batteries and the Setec charger, so all the van current comes and goes through that wire when not connected to 240V power. The second wire goes to the fridge from the tug, and the 3rd is the Setec aux input from tug. The couple of thinner wires are for water tank level indicators and the round wire is the 240 AC.

I have paralleled the fridge and Setec aux wires to only run the fridge, so doubled the amount of wire to the fridge. I now plan to run 6 B&S between the batteries and the Setec charger. Next Wednesday I am having a 6 B&S added to the tug to charge batteries via a DC to DC charger. I already have an 8 B&S fitted to the tug via a battery isolator, and that will now feed the fridge.

I think I get what you are saying Paul,,, sounds good to me.  At the end just make sure you check for any voltage drop at fridge etc (do this for all jobs like this) but you shouldn't have any problems.

And when you are checking for voltage drop, make sure the cable has the full load on it. Was talking to a bloke who had zero voltage drop on a 6mm auto wire to his 3 way fridge, when it was turned off. If you are drawing no current, you won't see any voltage drop.

I have really found out lately how true that is Bob. I find it strange that some multimeters have the capacity to read up to 10 amps with the supplied leads that are VERY lightweight!!!
