Apparently there are some moves afoot to regulate putting up an annex on vans where the refrigerator is on the left hand side. There are concerns that gas may leak out through the vents on the van side and build up in the annex. Queensland was specifically mentioned although it would no doubt apply in all states.
Has anybody heard of this?
I wonder where the governing bodies are likely to go with this - bring in a new standard for annexes to have ventilation around the bottom; make a gas detector compulsory in annexes; or ban annex walls on vans with the fridge on the left hand side.
Seems to be a massive overkill to me - has anybody ever heard of a gas build-up in an annex causing a fire or explosion?
And what about the many thousands of on-site vans with hard annexes? Those types of annexes are certainly air-tight!
(Luckily my Jayco has the fridge on the right hand side.)
We have our fridge on the right hand side as well. I've not heard of this rule at all, then again the states tend to try to outdo each other in making our lives tough. Eg. The battery monitor in NSW and very high cost of registering a caravan.
We have placed a CO alarm in the van, and I'm contemplating a gas alarm, although I think your nose would pick that one up when you are awake. Probably a good idea but not cheap.
Cheers

A friend bought a second had van from a dealer on the Gold Coast this year. Although the van had annexe walls, the dealer would not sell them to him with the van.
The dealer gave him a private contact where would be able to buy walls at a later date. (Slightly shonky) There must be some regulation out there he was working around.

Good afternoon Mr Newman,
Where your motor home installation was installed as compliant with the 2010 Australian Standard, there is no requirement to have that installation recertified to the current 2013 Standard. However, any future gas work to the installation will need to comply with the Australian Standard current at that time.
I hope this clarifies your question.
