with respect.....the remote battery monitor is a multi purpose device.
1 it monitors the voltage of the breakaway battery when applying the brakes
2 when the brakes are applied the electronics within the breakaway battery compartment apply a load onto the battery which reduced the voltage and if the voltage falls below the set point the red light and the warning buzzer will sound.
I am aware that the powers to be do not recommend commercial products but at this point in time my understanding the R V Electronics company is the only device that complies to the regulations.

OK with respect also,,, I found 4 controllers that comply with NSW regulations in a 5 min search of the web. There may be more.
If you had of worded your previous post as "my understanding" then it would have been OK by me just sounded like it was mandatory.
Not trying to be a smart arse, but others sometimes take what is said verbatim.
Didn't mean to offend and if I did I apologise.

I'm having a bit of difficulty following some of the posts here so I'm not sure if I have it correctly.
1. The breakaway battery was flat before your last trip as it has no independent charger to keep it topped up.
2. You want to dispense with the 12v 7Ah battery and wire directly into the house batteries.
3. I assume you have solar and your house batteries are kept on trickle charge when not using the van.
Why not wire the breakaway battery so it is charged from the house batteries? As long as your house batteries are charged, so is your breakaway system.
That's what I have and it works perfectly. No stuffing about with independent wires from your vehicle, no need for another charging system. All round very neat and simple.
It hasn't come up here yet, but I'm pretty certain you have to maintain the unit according to "manufactures" instructions. And I think in the instructions it says the gel battery has to be replaced every two years.
I wonder how many of you have dud or poor condition batteries in the unit?.

The Phantom
G'day Phantom,
1. Correct
2. Correct
3. Yes we have solar, we live in the van 24/7 so the batts are always on charge.
I think the thing that disturbs me the most about this is that there was no charging of the breakaway batt when disconnected from the tug and yes I will be taking out the small battery and running the breakaway off the house batts.
Cheers mate, hope you are well.

This is something that is never mentioned in the delivery of a new caravan. I think that instead of legislating crazy stuff the ruling bodies should get together and create a checklist for caravan and for that matter car delivery that covered all the essential stuff we, the voting plebs, need to know to keep us legal. Sorry to get political, please don't follow up with political comments, I don't want this thread closed
at the end of the day, I read the rules as having a rechargeable battery capable of holding the brakes and brake light for 15 mins on a hill. I'm sure my house batts will do that
cheers
