Yep, two things to remember is 1.if you are going clockwise keep turning right.2. if you are going anti clockwise keep turning left or you will miss Australia and fall off!
Enjoy your travels. We may past you in our new Jayco.
G'Day Gazza, we did the trip last year in our Avan camper freecamping when convenient and caravan parks the rest of the time. We should have taken more time as 103 days was really not enough time because quite often you will strike a town or attraction that really interests you. Conversely you will be told the you must see such and such but when you get there it is ho-hum. Don't take too much junk as you can always buy it on the road - we needed to buy a battery powered fan in Tennant creek and then a fan heater in Kalgoorlie which meant we weren't carting them around till we actually needed them. Don't worry about accomodation either - we were told Darwin and Broome were packed out and expensive yet at both we found van parks available quite easily and without having to book ahead. We budgeted on $100 a day incl fuel/attractions but that was just a rough figure. Some spots in the bush were so great we were at times tempted to spend a week just chilling out with the only cost being food. You don't need a new 4WD or gin palace caravan either - we used a Ford Territory with 250,000km on it with no problems.
Bottom line is that it sounds like you are doing your homework by asking questions and you should end up with a fair idea of what to expect and experience.
Good Luck.
Welcome Gazza, as Dougwe has said this is a great place to be.
A lot has already been said, but just fill you in on what we do.
We will only set 200 or 300 KMs travel per day, last trip, one day was only 25 KMs as the place we camped was so nice.
We set a fuel, food and accommodation budget and try not to exceed it (that amount has to fit with our pensions).
Most times we free camp as we are fully self contained, we will use a caravan park for a long hot shower, top up the water and charge the batteries (we have solar as well).
Other than that, the key is enjoy the journey, as there is really no destination..
Cheers

Hi Gazza, we took two years to do the big lap about 12 years ago, we do smaller trips now days,
When we first started out we had to learn to slow down and enjoy the experience.
do a lot of talking and ask questions (and please ignore anything that Dougwe says about me and talking!) its amazing the information you can gather from the other travellers you meet along the way.
Totally agree....don't take the iron, mattress works very well!!!!
don't take too much stuff. Most people won't realise that you have had that shirt on for the last three weeks!
slow down, enjoy and embrace the life! cheers Capricorn
