Broken Hill

We are going to Broken Hill in October as part of a trip thru central NSW and would like some idea on how many days we should allow for Broken Hill. From a quick Google search on Broken Hill it looks three or four days might be ample time to see most things of interest. Appreciate any advice forum members can give.

we found Broken Hill to be disappointing. Given its mining history, small mining towns do a better job and Kalgoolie blows B.H off the map. We found 3 days was ample

Broken is a OK. It is worth a look. It's sort of a bucket-list visit. More art galleries & artists per head of population that anywhere else is Australia. Don't try a pub crawl. There were over 25 pubs about 10 years ago. Had a good stay for a few days in the campground just on the way in from Adelaide. Most grey nomads I've ever seen in one park at the same time. No one was together but they arrived early afternoon, stocked up on supplies and were gone by sun up next morning. There are two other camp grounds that I've stayed at in the general area.

Copi Hollow (about 15 kms short of Menindee) has camping. Depending on your likes & dislikes, a day trip out from Broken Hill to www.tripadvisor.com.au/Hotel_Review-g504258-d2705483-Reviews-Maidens_Menindee_Hotel-Menindee_New_South_Wales.html is not bad. I've camped at Copi Hollow several times with the Ulysses.

Silverton is good. There is a huge campground at Silverton. silverton.org.au/penrose.htm on the right just before you get into Silverton. Camped there many times also with the Ulysses. Just be sure if you walk over to the pub and all the tourist bits in the daylight you may need a torch to get back. Getting stuck in the pub is too easy. Watching the sun set over the Mundi Mundi plains (about 4-5 kms west of Silverton) is an experience. Further on on the same road is a large reservoir. It's a oasis. Not sure how much water is in it at the moment.

There is a 90kph speed limit most of the way to Silverton from Broken Hill. It's there for a reason. Road is good but it's got lots of spoon drains just like Broken Hill itself. When it does rain, you know what they are for. Only bit of road I've ever travelled on that I've not been able to exceed the limit, even on a motorbike. It's a slow and easy trip and well worth it for a day or overnight.

I have a mate that lives out on the wilcannia rd, and some nights the noise and the lights shinning from Copi hollow would be unbelievable, now i now why.
Only joking, gods country up there absolutely perfect isn't it.
Been going up there for nearly forty years, originally working up there rabbit shooting, taking the rabbits to the chiller in Menindee.
Needed money when first coming out from england so thats what i did, either side of the Darling river.
Pomme.

Rowan, loved Broken Hill. There is a lot to see and do around the area. Spent 5 days there. Stayed out at Siverton. Took a whole day walking around Silverton, the pub there has great meals. Same as others have said, take your time, explore and enjoy. The art galleries are worth the trip, the sculptures in the desert amazing, the whole area is beautiful. Stating out at Penrose, we didn't find it a chore going in and out to Broken Hill. Always something different to see. So much history.
Enjoy.

Great info Spyderman. We love Broken Hill, visit most winters. We used to stay in town at the Lakeview cp but last visit discovered the Racecourse which is great. When we were there it was freezing and we parked in the bookies area under cover. There was a great happy hour fire too. I agree with Shekon's comments, I've heard great reviews about the Silverton camp but we have only done day trips. Next visit we plan to stay in town 2 nights and at least 1 night at Silverton. There is a lovely cafe in Silverton up on the hill with a sort of museum attached, old glass and things found from the mining days. Lovely food.
