Car Insurance Policy terminated.

Hi to all you Grey Nomads, my Hubby and I are having a problem with our Car Insurance Policy, we had a slight bingle with our Car $2-000 damage and when we contacted Auto and General Insurance we were told that they would honor this claim but because we have no fixed address whilst travelling indefinitely they would not be able to continue with our Insurance Policy and we would need to find alternative car Insurance. Can anyone advise us please on how to get around this and recommend another Insurance Company. Thank you.

Hi MM and welcome to the forum.

We are nomads as well, we have used our daughters home address as a base address. I'm pretty sure CIL do car insurance as well as caravans. They have no issues with nomads.

Good luck, CIL is a little more expensive but well worth it.

Cheers

Gday...

Let's assume you own a house - let's say in Victoria. You decide to rent it out and travel "indefinitely". You leave that address as 'your address' and have the tenants agree to forward all mail.

You are therefore "on holiday" and will be travelling all over Australia.

While in QLD 6 months later you have an accident in your vehicle and lodge a claim. Why would you say that the address they have for the insurance of that vehicle belongs to a 'no-fixed address' ?

It is no different if you are on holiday for 4-5-6-7 months or "indefinitely" - you were away from 'home' when the incident occurred.

Why would you need to have mentioned that your vehicle was of 'no fixed address'?

I travel full-time for the past six years - my vehicle, van and my licence have an address (family member) that is reflected on each. As far as anyone needs to be concerned, I am on 'holiday' away from that address.

However, as mentioned by Phil C, I think CIL is an insurance company that will insure your van for "Australia-wide" as I have my van with them ... meaning they are fully aware that you are on 'extended, indefinite travel' with the van. Many insurance companies consider that if it is away from a residence for extended periods they will not cover it - even if you have a permanent address that you only holiday from - albeit an 'extended' holiday.

I would suggest you search around for a company that provides coverage for how you intend to use the vehicle and van and that suits your particular circumstances.

Don't look at premium - look at what they actually provide in coverage.

Cheers - and happy and safe travelling - John

To the best of my memory I think they were the underwriters for the company that used to insure our tug. When I asked them to email my renewal because i was going on a trip they said I would no longer be insured as soon as I left home. apparently I was changing the risk If I used the car to go on holiday with the van. I cancel d the policy before they got a chance, along with another policy I had with them. Needles to say they no longer get any of our business.

GIO, GIO & GIO. No connection to the company whatsoever, but they're great. We've now got all of our policies with them.

We've had to claim on two different policies with them in the past three years & they were great with both claims.smilesmile

With APIA, van and 4x4, Van $75k = $1030 per annum, cover is far superior to CIL and we are talking small print here [PDS].
Nissan $30,000 = $620 per annum, no market value terms, will pay out insured amount regardless same with van, unlimited accommodation if needed, where as CIL max. 5 days, this is just an example of the difference in terms and conditions.

Cheers Peter

Ken Tame Insurance. Must be a member of CMCA ( cost $44/pa. )

Agreed value on van and car.  They know you are travelling most of the time.

We saved about $300 this year.
