yearly budgeting/costs

Hello All

I have had a quick search but can't find a thread on the yearly costs or budget for full time nomads.

I know this will vary greatly depending on the vehicles-rigs- expectations, but just after a general idea.

Assuming the vehicle and van are all owned, and we are looking at all other costs.

Allowing for all types of lifestyles and costs, I am very interested what people are spending?

cheers

Hi topspark and welcome to the forum.

I recently read something in a caravan magazine that nomads need (for the want of a better word) $500 a week to wander about this great land of ours.

Our biggest expense is fuel, if we are short of cash we sit in a free camp till the next pension payment, fill up the ute and move on. Now I know that is probably not the best solution. We are very lucky in that we camp for free at our son in law's winery/vineyard and can same up for the next adventure.

We went away on a 3000KM trip last October, stayed at a few free camps but mostly caravan parks. Whole business cost us $1800, that's about $600 a week all up.

We use excel to set our planning and budget, not a bad idea.

Cheers

Welcome to the gang topspark, enjoy here and out in the playground.

Me, I sort of don't bother with a budget now retired. I had 25 years of having to do a large budget in local Government, sticking to it and reporting monthly on it, so enjoy not HAVING to do one.

I tend to go by my Pension each month. If I don't have to hit my small "Slush Fund" at the end of each month I am "on budget" I reckon. I am on the road full time and my van is my home. So far I tend to stay in one spot for a length of time and that helps with fuel costs. I also free or low cost camp as much as possible. Works for me.

I do understand that a lot of people do set a budget and work from that.

Keep Safe out there.

Gday...

Firstly -

Welcome 02.jpg

As you suggest in your question, the variables are never-ending. confuse

I have attached an Excel spreadsheet that I got from Expedition Australia a couple of years ago.

It is a good basic way to figure out YOUR known and expected expenses and income to see the feasible affordability of your 'trip/journey'.

The spreadsheet is 'protected' so you just <TAB> to each cell to input your personal details/expectations. Therefore, you can change your expectations and the sheet will recalculate the outcome, shown at the bottom of the spreadsheet. [edit: and to go back to a previous cell, hold <SHIFT> and then press <TAB>]

The numbers already in the sheet are my actual and 'expected' figures.

Hope it is of some help.

Cheers - John

I don't keep count but seeing as I don't save to much, I travel full time and including insurance and every thing I spend about $45 000 a year. Then again I don't go without or should I say SWMBO doesn't

We live on the pension. As said above,we free camp to save.
If we save up a bit we can treat ourselves a bit.
We don't just "get by",we are happy with our lot.

We live full time on the road and spend about 50% of our time in caravan parks and 50% in free camps. We have 2 small dogs which cost us about $15 a week and if we only drink 5 nights of the week we spend app $900 per week but i must stress we eat very well,go to the movies once a week and treat ourselves to a meal once a week.My wife also does a lot of knitting so probably spends $20 a week on wool.Hope that helps you but i stress you could do it a lot cheaper than we do.The lifestyles whats important not what you spend.
