New Monto Site in Town

New handy campsite at Monto

Thanks to a tipoff from Yoeleven, I booked into a very convenient new site in Monto Queensland.

This has apparently only been open for a week (now 2 July 2015- excuse the bad dates on the photos!)

It is part of an old railway yard that has just been cleaned up by the council and is being tried out as an experiment.

Currently 72 hour limit, $5 per person per night. No power. No Dump point.

At present volunteers come round just before dark to collect the cash and give out receipts, but there is talk that the newsagent might issue tickets in the future.

It's next to clean toilets, behind the Information hut, opposite the Monto Grand Hotel, at the end of the main shopping street. Very convenient for IGA, Foodworks, 2 pubs with counter meals, some other cafes, Post Office and a reasonable range of shops.

There are notices stating a dump point is available at Monto Showgrounds, and there is a water tap in the picnic area near the toilets.

The Information hut folk are very pleasant and also said the local Caravan Park has just changed hands, so that there there might be better deals on offer there very soon.

Very handy position. Let's hope campers don't abuse the privileges and use the garbage bins provided!

Good on Monto for trialling this park. It is very well situated, walking distance to the whole shopping area. Had heard the caravan park was changing hands, hope it works out well for new owners. Monto is a lovely little town, very friendly, locals say g'day in the street, and you can get most of what you need in town - we got our gas refills from Kewpies, just around the corner from the Albert Hotel, friendly people in there as well.

Our van is not self-contained so stayed at Monto Caravan Park after checking out the free site (which looked very good). Van park has new owners and they deserve support. Partk has been run down but new people are enthusiastic, excellent to talk/deal with and working wonders to improve the park, which is old but clean with hot showers. An yone not into "free camping" could do worse than look at the commercial park. We stayed there a week ago.
