Our insurances are all coming up for renewal ( 4wd,car, campervan, yacht, House & contents) & decided to get a quote from a high profile insurance co. that is advertising on TV offering You & I a good price. The price quoted was indeed attractive but as we still have 3 weeks before renewal I resisted the persistant pressure to agree there & then until they begrudgingly agreed to email me a copy of their Product Discloure Documents. For those with vehicle or boat insurance make sure you check under the heading- what is required if they are lost or damaged by theft, attempted theft or malicious acts etc. - with this Company states among other things is:
Make a report to the police within 24 hours of the incidents & obtain an incident report from them.
How many people would be in a position to meet this requirement ie: know within 24 hours that their yacht on mooring or a boat on a trailer left at home while you are away has been stolen & report it to the police within 24 hours of it been stolen. The same applies if you have two Vehicles & leave one at home when away for more than 24 hours. Our current insurer only requires us to contact the Police as soon as we are aware of the abovementioned incidents. Be careful & understand your insurance cover & obligations.
Yes I spoke to that company about a quote for caravan insurance.
To cut a long story short I decided to go with RACV insurance, but since the initial contact I have had numerous phone calls, trying to get me to switch to them.
Persistence usually pays off, but not in my case after the each call my response was "please don't call me again", on the final call so far, with them offering a price well under $500 I lost it amongst many other things at the end of the call, I said "don't call me again and F... O..".
It annoys me when people don't listen, If I ask for a quote then give me the best price not go into a bidding war with competitors, just as a guide on 30k the quotes ranged from 450 to 1800.
I too had dealings with that mob approx this time last year and they pestered me for weeks. I told them I wasn't interested as My original Insurance Co offered a great deal. That other "Mob" said no way known, I emailed the quote from my now current Co and have never hear from the "Mob" again.
I have a bit of a chuckle every time I see the Add on the box now.

Re David mentioning the requirement to report an incident within 24 hours - this is standard practice with all insurance companies and not unique to YOUI plus it is common sense.
Good Luck.

Sorry to ramble on for my first post - David
I have had my car insured with the above mentioned company for over 3 years and cannot speak too highly of their service. On checking their PDS for both car and caravan it states clearly that you " must report any incident within 30 days of becoming aware of the incident".
As for the PDS, they are freely available on their website.
If you received the alleged information when talking to a sales person, ignore it and stick to the information included in the PDS. After all it is a legal document and it is your responsibility to read the document before you take out any insurance with any company.
We have our van insured by CIL and the ute by the RAA, yes they are dear BUT we recently had to claim with both these companies, they both made the extra expense worth while.
There are a number of companies that will not insure your van if you live in it 24/7 like we do.
Cheers

I just got three quotes. RACV, CIL & APIA. I ended up with APIA.
RACV would not send me out a written/e-mail quote, I had to agree to everything over the phone, pay it and then cancel within 21 days if I didn't like the deal. It was also very frustrating dealing with them as I had to go thru 5 levels of menu and finally a very, very long disclaimer spiel. I have house, contents and two cars with them so I have a multi-policy discount. Had some very frustrating dealings with RACV lately. RACV have been very good with claims. Had 2 house, 1 contents & one no-fault car claim in last 10 years that were handled brilliantly.
I've been burnt twice before singing up over the phone (electricity & phone). When I got the contract, it had a massive number of conditions not mentioned on the phone. Got my money back eventually but had to go thru the industry ombudsman.
CIL quote was OK. Used them before but never claimed.
APIA was a few dollars cheaper than CIL but dearer than RACV. They also have a multi policy discount as per RACV. So after I checked what all my insurance renewals would be for the rest of the year I decided to go APIA and transfer other policies to them as they arrived. They also do health insurance.
And the other one that advertises heavily on TV - you cannot deal with them without a mobile. Even though in mentions land-line on their website, it doesn't work. I confirmed that on their Facebook website - mobile required and land-line option doesn't actually work. Told them I was unwilling to deal under those circumstances. I got rather an arrogant answer. Something along the lines of "we've got enough business without bothering with someone who doesn't have a mobile".
Hako- I don't consider requiring to report theft within 24 hours of it happening is the norm.
The norm is & should be to report theft as soon as possible or within 24 hours of becoming Aware of the theft. As I mentioned in my original post there are many instances when it is impossible for you to know within 24 hours that the theft has occurred.
We had all of our insurances with RACV, changed them all to GIO a few years ago & saved a packet on every one. We've had 2 claims with GIO since changing over, they were fantastic.

Umpie1- I received the information by email with their current PDS attached - I emailed them back with my reasons for not continuing with their quote & received a reply from the salesperson thanking me for my feedback. (nothing to say that I misread their PDS).
You are correct in saying it is a legal document but we all need to make sure when renewing insurance policies each year we check the current PDS.
The Car PDS as sent to me contains the information as reported in my original post on page 38 item 3. The Watercraft PDS
We chose CIL for the one a year windscreen cover Apia is a little cheaper but no free windscreen cover .
We are at present having a cracked screen replaced so consider ourselves very clever for our choice

I think David said to report it to police within 24 hours AND OBTAIN A COPY OF THE INCIDENT REPORT FROM THEM.
I don't think many states provide a copy of the report (especially in 24 hours timeframe) at all and provide only the reference number.

Im like Ame - I have no idea who this insurance co is that David is referring to in his original post. I do watch some TV but have developed the knack of switching off from the noise of adverts, so haven't heard their catch cry.
Please someone - put us out of our misery and tell us how this company is !!

The amazing things you see when nomading Australia
rocklizard - I have just checked the website link you posted & the PDS for cars & watercraft are different than those the company emailed to me ie: Item 3 on pages 20 for cars & 19 for watercraft by stating that you need to make a report to police within 24 hours of becoming AWARE of the incident -
As mentioned previously the PDS the company emailed me which also has many more pages of information than the website advise at item3 on pages 38 for cars & 25 for watercraft that police must be advised WITHIN 24 hours of the incident.
I would of course been happy with the conditions as outlined in the website PDS so I can only advise that anyone considering insurance they insist that the Company issues you with a copy of PDS that will apply to the particular policy they are quoting on.
Just check your insurance for market value or agreed value some companies have a clause that states that they pay the lesser of the sum insured or the market value. For instane you pay for a policy for a van that you paid 50000 for but they can find one on the internet for 40000 they will pay 40000 maximum unless your policy is an agrred value.
Insurance renewal is my biggest bugbear, everyone wants to insure houses, car , motorhome for more then they are worth to replace and make me fell guilty for bringing them back to the right value.

We were with who YOU&I know. They said that they do not have a nil excess on their policy, so after one year we switched back to our long term Insurer. Our policy with them is now a NIL excess and the price was just slightly above the you&i with the added risk of $600 excess.
