Tablet vs laptop

I have been a long time windows laptop user , and have bought myself a 10 in  Android tablet thinking it would be more portable, and easier to use. It is more portable, but I found it harder to get on the internet with. I can,t get the tablet to recognize the usb modem, and so can,t get on the web with it.The laptop (win8.1) is easier to use, but I am a long time windows man. What am I doing wrong?

Try crossing your legs and yelling for help. It works for me.

But seriously try to find courses for these sort of a problems,  our local library ran a course which was useful.

I have the greatest and latest tablet well it was a few months back it works a treat for me not ever go near the office any more. Send emails, check facebook, greynomads, take photos and google, just love it.

Now I got to learn where my money is and then I will be right in the meantime I really need my wife. Ralph.

You need a WIFI modem to get your Tablet on the net or you can set your smartphone up as a WIFI hotspot and run it off your phone. I tried with a USB modem and I had the same problem.
I love my tablet, still learning how to do certain things on it. Somethings you cant do that you can on the Laptop.

I bought a Microsoft tablet with USB just so I could use my USB modem. BUT 'they' made it so that doesn't work. Had to buy a wireless box for the tablet. At least my laptop works on that as well.

If your tablet has a USB port, whether it's Android or Windows, you should be able to get your USB modem working, as long as you have the correct driver installed. If you give me the make and model of your tablet and that of your modem, I should be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi Bill

If your tablet is a relatively recent buy from an Australian shop like JB HIFI or DS (as opposed to Fleabay or from overseas), go into the nearest shop with your sales receipt and ask them for help. Don't go in on a weekend - they will be too busy, but during the week, most of the salespeople are computer nerdy and will be pleased to help you and show you a lot more stuff that will be helpful for you.

If its a current model and a popular one - see if JB HIFI stock that brand (check on their on-line store). If they carry them, go into any of their stores even if you didn't buy it from JB, tell them youve lost your sales docket and ask for help - Im sure they will sort it out for you really quickly.

If you don't already know, also see if you have a built in compass and get them to enable it - great to use with wiki camps app to find the Optus satellite for TV dishes (if you have one or may get one in future)

Tablets (windows, android, ipad) are cheaper to run via your smart phone (I think) when away from you home wifi. If you have a USB modem don't you need another mobile account? Maybe a new cheap smartphone with WiFi is cheaper that buying & running a USB modem.

Don't the pads/tablets have mini USB ports and modems have the regular size plugs? The two do not mate. You thus need wireless interconnection with the modem.

With all the problems that posters have using tapa-talk I think I will stick with my Asus transformer. It has a real keyboard and proper USB ports to charge the modem.. I can detach the tablet if I wish to use the tablet after I have finished on the internet.

Using a tablet on the phone's wifi is actually faster that using my pc on my wireless / NBN connection. The android system appears very efficient. Not multitasking like a PC. Don't know how efficient windows tablets are but certainly android & iPads are very efficient. The tablet on the house wifi/NBN is very, very fast.

Do need to have your phone internet limit set to close when you reach your monthly quota otherwise you may run up a huge bill.

I use our iPads via a mini wifi router, they will run up to 5 devices the 3G ones do or the 4g ones can run up to 10 devices. We only use 3G with an Aldi sim and works for us and no speed issues.

I don't have a smart phone. I have an account for my USB modem. The computer guy at the shop and also Telstra tried for ages to get it to work on the tablet to no avail. Seemed too silly to me that it wouldn't but then a driver required makes sense. Wonder why they didn't suggest it.

Spida, I did a bit of googling and found that your internet banking issue of not being able to pay bills is a common one. The problem is to do with the version of encryption that the bank's server requires. If you're comfortable with changing settings in Internet Explorer, then you can try changing the setting yourself.

Go to the menu, Tools/Internet Options, then click on the Advanced tab.

Now scroll down to the Security section.

You should see the settings as shown in the pic.

What you want to do, is to un-tick the TLS 1.2 setting.

Click OK.

Now close Internet Explorer and restart it and try to pay a bill.

If that doesn't work, then you should preferably go to a branch that has a help desk with your tablet, or phone your bank's help centre and get them to talk you through any other settings changes required.

Let me know how you go :)

No - the Windows Surface tablet has a normal sized USB port. Dont know about others.
