Maybe Port Hedland read my post from a few days back. They have just opened a new free camp in town today a we are the first ones in.
Its about the size of a football field, located off gregory st between the tennis club a football field; enter via the tennis club driveway a there is a dump point a water as you enter.self contained only a needs mowing.
Info supplied by the info centre.
The lady also confirmed the down turn in people staying over night a the c/p fees were way to expensive.

Well well; just had a visit from the council at 5 00pm a welcomed us with open arms for being the first to use the facility, followed by an interview a photos for the local paper.
They informed us that council is going to build a new caravan park next year.
grass will be mowed tomorrow a garbage bins supplied.

Jim. I hoped the two of you got dressed up for the press pic - you never know they may syndicate the article to all the major papers in the cities - I don't want to see you on the front page of the Melbourne papers dressed only in your budgie smugglers lol
Seriously, great to hear the Council is doing this. Did they give you any idea of how much they intend to charge for their proposed new CP sites?
Cheers Bruce

The amazing things you see when nomading Australia
JC, I just had a look on Wikicamps after seeing you post. I will be travelling through Pt Hedland in a few weeks so interested. Thinking I might have to look in at the Golf club at South Hedland or free camp further north.
It's in Wikicamps with the address being Gregory St. As its new I was surprised to find it Wikicamps but there are no comments or pics yet. Perhaps you would like to enter some pics and comment when you leave. It should be a good location perhaps a bit noisy from the wagon shunting which goes on 24/7. But then it is the worlds biggest port by tonnes shipped.
I did note that google earth has the street name as Mc Gregor st. though. Not that it matters much the place is easy to find.
Thanks for letting us all know.
Cheers
Moonraker.
Moonraker. Thanks for that correction in street name. I had Gregory on my mind due to a family matter my mistake a you are correct. Its right beside the race course.
The wiki entry is mine thats why it was so quick.
Bruce. No details were given a im thinking of calling into the council office tomorrow for a further chat.
As for the photo I said I was a bit rough around the edges but the chick said I looked good; there is hope yet. LOL.
Maybe its like that old saying; I still have it just cant find any one who wants it.LOL.

It isn't that new, it was there in 2013 although it was very waterlogged at that time due to heavy rain.
Just checked my trip notes.
The above site I was referring to was in McGregor St, not far from Cooke Point : http://www.porthedland.wa.gov.au/News/Details.aspx?NewsID=487

Thanks JC that is a good find. I used to go up there for work just a few days at a time and remember the unused land next the sports fields and race course. I look-forward to seeing you comments on Wikicamps you should put s pic of you being the first ones in.
Cheers
