Thought about putting this in Tech area but thought more replies likely here. I am going overseas soon and am looking at getting an android tablet. What recommendations (or warnings!) / pointers do you have to be able to run Wikicamps.
Wiki Camps can be run quite easily on a smart phone I use HTC phone from Telsta cost $178 as a prepaid, but if you are going overseas you will need one that is unlocked.
Any decent tablet should be able to run Wiki Camps.
Cheers
David
I don't have (or as yet need) a mobile phone. Plan is to have the tablet to also be a large GPS screen in the car. Was looking at buying in Singapore to get duty free :)
Peter. Watch out when you buy an Android tablet - some do not have gps or a built in compass (great if you have a satellite TV dish) - and don't believe the salesperson - most don't have any idea. Dick Smith and JB HIFI usually run specials for androids and you can pick a good one up for about $200. BUT check the tech specs on-line based on the model offered to find out about GPS and compass.
Dick Smiths usually special a tablet once a month (don't ask staff if they will be specialing one in advance as these companies do not tell their staff or managers until they do a special or catalogue - they don't trust their staff and think they will tell everyone to hold off till the special starts before buying. A special or catalogue usually lasts at least a week or until they run out of stock.
I bought a $500 android from DS on special for $200 (I waited because I did have inside knowledge).
Make sure you buy a pack of screen protectors at time of purchase and pay to get one fitted

The amazing things you see when nomading Australia
I love my Samsung 10.5 latest and greatest, spent the money but no regrets.
Great camera, did I tell you about the great camera.
My poor old friend laptop sit in the bag never gets used. The office computer is seriously lonely. My good cameras have put in a box with disused electrical gear never to see the light of day. Did I tell you how good the camera is.
For picking up the internet compared to the wife's expensive top quality laptop with all the bells and whistles is very clever.
May of cost a bit but is awesome. Samsung you have done it again.
I now also brought a Samsung S5 phone and likening it but learning all the time to use it.
Pete. I think most people have Samsung Galaxy tablets - we have one each. I use mine for wikicamps, newspaper subscriptions and ebooks mostly although heaps of free and very useful Apps there which are great for nomads - like Australia Emergency - theres a heap of them.
BUT don't believe what the salesperson tells you about the features - particularly Dick Smith staff who are mainly part-time, casual staff and usually untrained.
Take your specs along so you can read the fine print on the packaging box and make sure it is GPS enabled and also try to find one with a built in compass in case you have a TV satellite dish (makes alignment to Optus 1 so much easier). A few current Galaxy models don't have either feature.
Also buy a travel case at the same time to protect it in case you drop it. You will find that these little stalls in the middle of shopping centres run by a bunch of Asian kids do not stock covers for the Galaxy range. Reason - Samsung turn out too many models and they wont spend all that money for all the models.
If you buy from DS (who usually run a really good special once a month on Samsung tablets) or JB HIFI - but the cover from them at the same time. If they have n covers in stock, be careful in case theyre flogging off a run-out model and you wont be able to get a case (but Ive always googled for covers and buy them on line - often cheaper). Also buy the protective screen covers and get them fitted by the Asian stall kids. You will scratch the tablet screen without a protective plastic screen cover
