Take action "NOW" for flooding in parts of the Pilbara

Thursday 28 May 2015 - 11:18 AM
People in Pilbara Coastal river catchments need to take action "NOW" as the Bureau of Meteorology has advised flooding is occurring and is expected to continue through to Friday.
Water will be fast flowing and levels will rise quickly.
Be careful at crossings and floodways as river levels may rise rapidly.
Obey road closure signs and do not drive into water of unknown depth and current.
Take care on gravel and unsealed roads as they may be slippery and muddy, and you could get bogged.
If your car stalls in rising water, abandon it immediately and seek shelter above floodwater.
ROAD CLOSURES:

A number of roads are closed including:

Fortescue River Side Track at Marble Bar Road.
Nanutarra-Munjina Road from Paraburdoo Intersection to Hamersley Road.
Marble Bar Road from Marble Bar through to the Jigalong turnoff.
North West Coastal Highway from Roebourne to Great Northern Highway intersection. Please note trucks and Four-Wheel Drives are now permitted to travel on the road with caution.
Nanutarra-Munjina Road from Hamersley Road to Auski Roadhouse is now open but road users are advised to take caution.

FLOOD DETAILS:

As at 11.07am the Bureau of Meteorology advises there is a Flood Warning for the Pilbara Coastal Rivers.

Local flooding is being experienced along the Pilbara Coastal Rivers and is expected to continue during Thursday and early Friday.
9 am Thursday widespread rainfall totals of 15 mm to 30 mm were recorded with the heaviest falls of 82 mm at Carraba, south of Port Hedland. For the 24 hours to 9 am Friday 15 mm to 25 mm of rainfall is expected with isolated totals as much as 50 mm per day over the Port Hedland Coast, Fortescue and De Grey River catchments. Rain is expected to clear from the region by the weekend.
Areas of concern where localised flooding is occurring and may develop include:

Port Headland Coast
De Grey River
Fortescue River
