Gday...

Since this 'requirement' has been posted on here, and I checked that my rego plate is OK, I am making a point of checking every van I see.

I am astonished cry hmm

At least 1 out of every 3 I have looked at are non-compliant.

And not just the rego plate either - their tail/brake/indicator light assemblies are also not compliant in about 1 in 5 vans I have seen.

Incredible so many manufacturers are so completely unaware of the requirement of the ADR ... or just lazy ? cry

If this gets the "proper attention" as a result of NRMA (and others?) there are going to be a helluva lot of vans needing to be "recalled" for rectification. cry

Cheers - John

You are correct, I have seen the same.........the interesting thing is when you bring the issues to their attention the reply is normally " I have not been told and I have had my van for years and no one has complained" or "I have it registered so it must be OK". Why they don't take their vans back for rectification I do not know......I always wonder how the insurance companies will react if a claim is made because the insurance companies policy states the van must be legal.

Regarding the rear lights being compliant, when you see the number of vans with boxes etc on the rear they MUST fail being compliant because you can't see the rear lights from the angle stated in the ADR.

In fact, when the rear tyre is attached to the van, it normally causes obstruction/view of the rear lights and this makes the caravan defective....so I ask how can they be legal on the road.

My brother is currently in a CP in southern Queensland and he found nearly all the vans were illegal.

As a retired Highway patrol cop and also watching this story unfold, it would seem that there has to be more to it. The Road transport (vehicle Registration) Regulation states, (1) Unless otherwise approved by the Authoruty, a registered operator of a registered registrable vehicle must ensure that a vehicle number plate issued by the Authority for the vehicle is permanently affixed to the vehicleso that (assuming the vehicle to be on level ground): (a) the number plate is at all times: (i) in an unright position that is substantially parallel to the vehicles axles; and (ii) not more than 1.3 meters above ground level; and (b) the numbers on the numberplate are clearly visible from a distance of 20 meters at any point within an arc of 45 degrees from the surface of the number plate above or to either side of the vehicle. (2) Subclause (1)(a) and(b) do not apply to a vehicle number plate of a registrable vehicle if: (a) due to the constructionof the vehicleit is not practicable to comply with thoses paragraphs; and (b) the number plate is affixed in a manner that compliesso far as practicable with those paragraphs. So folks take time to digest all of that but I can only speak for myself, I would have not issued the ticket due to the subclause the only way this ticket would have been issued by me personally is if the person I was dealing with failed the attitude test and yes there are a lot of people who do. Some people don't like interactions with police which is a shame as our men and women of policing are there to do a job and that is to keep everyone safe.
