Caution Using Tall Plastic Stools

I had one of these stools collapse when I sat on it.   It was on level ground on a hard surface and just shattered into sharp shards when I sat on it, plonking me down still on the square seat part.   The shattered parts came up alongside my derry air, piercing my pants putting cuts alongside both cheeks and a puncture hole in my upper leg.   I dread to think what would have happened if one of the shards had pierced you know where.

I usually used this stool as a table or to rest my legs on it when camping, or an extra seat for visitors outside under an awning, or take it with me to sit on also if visiting a happy hour.   The stool was a couple of years old the plastic and may have deteriorated over time.

I was aware that these needed to be sat on carefully and did not "plonk" myself on it, lowering myself gently when it collapsed.  A pic of the same type of stool is shown here;

Plastic stools and chairs have claimed a lot of victims over the years Weevil, I have personally witnessed a few of them collapse.

The worst I heard of years ago involved a shooting stick with a plastic seat similar to the pic below, the plastic seat hardened with age and failed while in use, the metal pole broke through the seat and inserted itself you know where, causing catastrophic injuries, needless to say they were withdrawn from sale quick smart. no

We dont do plastic either, my daughter badly damaged her ankle when she stepped out one of our previous vans onto one of those grey plastic Fiamma steps, it cracked and split and her foot and ankle went through it.

When I took it back and complained they gave me a new one, it went in the bin!

Ouch, seems it can happen with a lot of plastic products, especially if exposed to the weather like caravan steps etc.

I wonder what the liability of some of these products would be or is it buyer beware (caveat emptor) ?

 My Fiamma step cracked last week, after around 10 years use.  In the bin for it.

I think that I'll try an aluminium one next or perhaps manufacture one from marine ply ... with a thong drawer.

Geez Cupie, I didn't know you were into wearing thongs...wink biggrin.....sorry mate, couldn't help myself, sounds like a good idea.

I did have a very good wooden one until SWMBO ran over it, now got the Fiamma but have my doubts about that now.   Saw a very good aluminium one, I think it may have been at Bunnings or a camping store.

 Sorry .... For Thong read Jandals or Flip Flops.   I don't think that I could stand the thong string up the crack ... so no thongs of that sort for me.

Somewhere I have a sneaky photo of some young thing sitting at an outdoor table at a pub in Bath (England).  The string of her thong was studded with jewels & disappeared into the bum crack.  A sight to behold!  Wonder where the jewels stopped.  It only came to my notice as I was walking along the footpath & her posterior was poking out towards me.  So I took a happy snap like we tourists do.
