I'd just ask - you will have no option anywhere in the particular town you are visiting but you do have the choice to fill the watertank or not.
Most inland towns in Qld for instance are either bore or blended dam and bore depending on how much water is in the dam or how good the bore is. We live in Toowoomba and have blended water which I reckon tastes great.
Remember not all bores are bad....some are so soft you hardly need soap. Charleville bore water was so good locals used to take it with them when they went 'away'.
Spring water can be as full of minerals as bore water by the way. People from places like Quilpie have very good teeth due to the bore water so there are positives.

Not much to add to that for sure.

Except, that is why there is a 'sacrificial' anode in the HWS - so that it 'absorbs' the impurities and slowly dissolves, sacrificing itself, rather then the water tank.

Check and replace the anode at least every 12 months ... but if in 'bad' water areas, check (and maybe replace) every 6 months.

Jim, sample the local water. If you are not prepared to drink some more of it then don't top up the tanks.

Simple Hey Jim. you take a sample of water and weigh it. If it's light water it's bore water because it has to be pumped up to the tank. The heavier stuff is from the sky and has to be heavier to make it fall down. Dr Julius - Why is it so ? = eat your heart out.

Yes it's always good to ask. I think it was Bourke NSW had town water and irrigation water from separate taps in town.

Baz I remember Walgett having a dual water supply system.

The often cloudy water was chlorinated but not filtered and was for garden and toilet flushing use.

The drinking water was excellent.

I got Hep A in Moree many years ago. It was well advertised in the local paper not to drink the local tap water without boiling it first. Problem was caused by bushfires followed by floods. However same sign was not in the motel room and I drank heaps straight from the tap. If in doubt about whether the water is drinkable, boil it first. If really in doubt, Pasteurised or Distilled water using fermented grains or fruit is the best.
