Ours doesn't have silencer .. It pulls in air from front of lounge seat through heater to the other side.. In our motor home.
I assume a van would be about the same ? It does have a plastic screan over the end.. I guess to filter and silence ?
I have just installed a Diesel heater in my caravan and am going to fit a air intake silencer.
Has anyone installed one of these and was there a marked reduction in noise and where was it purchased from?
Regards Chris
Which intake are you refering to; the burner or the air to be heated?.
I fitted one 6mths back & never heard of an intake silencer; how ever there is an exhaust muffler for the burner which I dont think comes with some of the cheap units ; eg. Ebay.
My burner intake has a plastic housing on it with slots for the air flow, maybe this is what you are refering to.
Which way did you set it up for the air to be heated intake, internal or external? if external maybe you are getting some exhaust noise from there, maybe some fumes as well.

Are we talking about the noise from the furnace where it sucks the air from outside, burns the diesel, then exhausts to burnt air back outside? Not the air that is drawn from within the van warmed as it passes the furnace and warms the interior of the van.
Hi Chris,
I fitted a Airtronic D2 twin outlet Diesel heater to my van. An exhaust muffer was supplied. I have not fitted an air intake muffer. At start up the heater is noisy with most of the noise coming from the air intake as you have found. You can buy a muffer there are two types but I dont know how effective they are. I did investigate where to buy but due to silly prices and the fact that I didnt know how effective they would be I decided not to bother fitting one. Once the heater gets the van up to temperature the heater backs off and becomes quiet enough, it can maintain van temerature just ticking over. Talking of ticking, if you have mounted the pump underyour bed area under the floor as most have you might find the pump ticking is more of a problem for you at night. Many have fitted their pumps on rubber mounting or have made enclosers. I fitted the pump on my van at the back under the bathroom with fuel tank behind the spare wheel so dont have this issue to solve thankfully.
The first time I used the heater I asked the people closest to us if they where bothers with the start-up noise of my heater. The guy said, "Dont worry mine makes the same noise but it soon goes quiet they are all the same. the only people who will not like it are those who dont have one"!!
I was surprised at his comment of course!
If you do decide to buy one it will most likely set you back $120 plus postage. They are on ebay and RVWarehouse.com also sell them as well as others google search should find them.
Mine seems to get quieter each time we use it!
Cheers
Nigel

I don't think anyone has a silencer there. When we talk about intake air silencers there we mean the combustion air intake, ie the intake pipe under the van.

Yes I see that.. Our one is so quiet outside you only hear a slight shsh noise.. The exhaust is that crimpled flex pipe..
I has its own baffles in the flex pipe.. yes there is a silencer on both sides..
The silencer that I was thinking of is on the air intake pipe underneath the van. I had the heater running at it's maximum and I got under new the the van and the audible noise was coming from the air intake not the exhaust hence the thought of a silencer but as another poster has said they are at silly prices. I am now thinking of a mower muffler or a air compressor air intake these sell for around $5 on eBay.
